A RainWing was swinging through the trees, then he landed on the soft ground, almost crashing into a hunk of sharp vines.
He saw it, he saw the tunnel. The tunnel to the SandWing kingdom. He had never been allowed outside his kingdom, but this, this felt like the right time, he just knew it.
The RainWing dug his claws through the thick wall of bushes and finally was able to break through. He walked in slowly... and started walking faster because he thought he heard a growl and claws scratching the stone floor and a pair of bright golden eyes and white speckled wings.
When he got out of the tunnel, he looked behind him and saw a NightWing following him. Teak opened his wings and shot into the air. The NightWing was still following him. He was starting to get worried.
RainWings didn't have good eyesight, but he knew the little town below him was the Scorpion Den. The Scorpion Den was a walled city with winding alleyways and run-down stone buildings. The streets were filled with rickety stalls and tents, most of which sold different types of merchandise. Almost every other stall sold water or brightsting cactus, the only known antidote to SandWing venom. The streets were dusty, crowded, and tight. There was a guarded oasis in the center of the town.
He stretched his talons and landed in the sand. He immediately regretted it. It felt like he had started walking on the sun covered in izula ants. His scales started to dry out and he felt like he hadn't drunk water in weeks.
"OW!! OW! OW!! Ouch!" He started hobbling toward a SandWing who looked friendly, and helpful. But then the sand gave him a friendly reminder.
Teak felt his talons, ruff, and tail tip turning pink with embarrassment. The RainWing tried to suppress it by turning them yellow, but they were still mostly pink. She laughed and said, "They're selling popsicles over there if ya want one."
Teak scratched his already sweating ruff and asked the SandWing where the houses were.
"Walk down that alley over there, then take a right and you'll see an orange and yellow SkyWing with a bunch of scars on his back, ask him to open up a slot for you for about seventy gold coins."
"Thanks!" Teak replied, "Can I get your name?"
"Jasper." "I'm Teak," The RainWing nodded. "Thanks again!" He turned and followed Jasper's directions and saw the SkyWing that fit her description.
"Hi, someone told me you open the house slots, correct?"
The SkyWing nodded and asked, "Do you need one?"
"Yeah, I'll be staying here for a while," Teak opened his pouch and placed the money in the SkyWing's opened talon. "I'm Teak by the way."
"I'm Spark, nice to meet you."
Two years later, Teak had been living with Jasper and they had gotten a lot closer. Jasper was napping and Teak was frying a long vegetable called asparagus over a campfire. Teak wondered why Jasper was napping so much lately, and if he should get her some sort of present to celebrate her hatching day in two days.
Finally, when the asparagus was done, he dumped it into two wooden bowls, and wrapped it with bacon (a kind of cooked pig meat that was finely sliced and dried out in the sun). He then threw a few pieces of something called cheese on it (a type of fermented milk), tossed water over the fire, and waltzed inside.
"Hey, Jasper, I made dinner!" Teak called upstairs.
A few moments later, Jasper walked down the wooden stairs and grinned at him. Teak scooped a glass of water from the large bucket they had in the kitchen for himself (not Jasper, because she didn't need it, nor want it). She sat down at the table as he served the asparagus, and they started talking.
They were talking about a little young, disrespectful SandWing dragonet that had insulted several dragons who were minding their own business, then Jasper said this: "Teak... I've been meaning to tell you this for a while. . . ." Jasper started. "We have a dragonet."
Teak didn't know he had a dragonet!
The RainWing picked up his dishes, left them by the water bucket, and walked outside to think. What would it look like? Was it a he or a she? What would they name it?
Then, suddenly, something slammed into him from behind, knocking all the breath out of him, and pinned his wings down. Teak was now on the ground under a huge NightWing that was flicking his forked black tongue. It was the same gold-eyed NightWing who had followed him two years ago!
"Growl, you took everything from me, you lazy, stupid RainWing!"
"What? You must be mistaken! What are you talking about?" Teak tried to remember anyone he may have hurt or... maybe even gotten killed.
The NightWing slashed Teak on the snout and soon blood was dripping into his mouth. The RainWing changed his scales to the same light tan as the sand under him, slipped out of the NightWing's grasp, slid under him, and started sprinting like there was no tomorrow. Though... he felt guilty about leaving Jasper. Obviously, the Scorpion Den was not safe... but a dragonet having to grow up without a family member? Just sad.
Jasper would hate him for this. He would never be able to come back to this life.
