Wait a minute- wingbeats? Oh no. That couldn't be good. Verbena threw some water on the dying embers from last night and took a deep breath, letting her scales fade to the same golden brown as the surrounding sand. She let her eyes close and her body relax.

Verbena opened her eyes to see... Tiderider?! How did he get here?! She examined him and noticed he had numerous scrapes and bruises all over his body. She slowly let her scales change back to their usual color.

"Tiderider?" she said tentatively. Tiderider nodded. Verbena ran over and flung herself into his wings. "I thought you were dead! SandWing food for sure! I'm so glad you're okay!" "Well... I don't know if 'okay' is the way to put it."

She let go of him and darted back over to her bag. "Have you eaten anything?" When he shook his head, Verbena threw an apple at him. He poked it with one claw.

"How do you eat this?" he asked. "You goof!" she said, giving him a friendly shove. "I know, I was just messing around."

He devoured the apple in less than a minute. "So... should we start flying again?" Tiderider nodded and tossed the apple core into the water behind him. Verbena picked up her stuff and they spread their wings and shot into the sky.

They had been flying for a few hours now and they'd just started seeing the sand turn to pebbles and pebbles turn to rocks and rocks turn to boulders and boulders turn to mountains.

Tiderider paused to hover in midair. He slowly pointed a claw in front of him. Verbena swiveled her head. She saw a NightWing and a MudWing fighting and breathing blasts of fire at one another. The MudWing dove underneath the NightWing kicked him in the chest, seized his tail, and swung him around, finally letting go of him and letting him smash into the rock. Oooh, that looks like it hurt.

"ROOAAARR!!!" "GET AWAY FROM ME, NIGHTWING!!!" And suddenly, a blast was shot at the night dragon, but the fire missed and instead hit Verbena! A searing pain shot through her, but the NightWing and the MudWing didn't seem to notice a bright white hybrid dragon who was falling to her death.

Tiderider dove after her, but a giant hawk conveniently flew in front of his face and hit him, preventing him from getting her. "Verbena!" he yelled. As he threw the hawk away, the MudWing slammed into his side, sending him careening him away.

Verbena didn't have the energy to let out that I'm-about-to-die scream, instead, it was being used to aim for the small lake that was becoming bigger by the second.

But suddenly, a big dragon who looked to be a SkyWing with watermelon pink wings and rose-gold scales swooped in and caught Verbena at the last second, beating her enormous wings furiously, as though she'd done this a thousand times.

The last thing the hybrid remembered was being set down gently on the cold stone and covered with a soft blanket, then everything went black.

"Are you awake? Please be awake, you're worrying me right now, strange SandWing." Verbena groaned.

"Where am I? Who are you? What happened? Where's Tiderider?"

"First question, you are in my cave, which is on the outskirts of the Sky Kingdom. Second, my name is Crossbill, I am a Witch Doctor who helps injured dragons. Third, you got hit with a blast of fire from a MudWing, so yeah, I saved your life, you're welcome by the way. And fourth, who's Tiderider?"

"Tiderider is a SeaWing-NightWing hybrid, he's got blue and black scales and dark blue wings. And my name is Verbena." Verbena flared the ruff behind her ears, curled her long, prehensile tail in around itself, and fireworks of pink and green exploded on the gold scales.

"Oooh, guessing game! Are you... a chameleon? Are you... a cuttlefish? I'm just kidding, you're part RainWing aren't you?"

Verbena nodded. Then, as if reminding her, pain shot through her again. The golden dragonet winced as she opened her left wing and saw that she had a big burn mark that had torn through the biggest membrane.

How am I going to get to the rainforest now? It's not too late to turn back, is it? Verbena thought somberly.

"Ooh, jeez, those scratches look really bad! Chew this up and spit it on them. You can have some of this as well." Crossbill handed Verbena a tall, bristly-stemmed plant and a piece of honeycomb.

"Also, drink this," Crossbill said. She held out a clay mug with tea in it. "Obviously, wait 'til it cools down, but it's marshmallow tea; it helps with fighting infections. Get some rest, I'm going to get something for us to eat. What do you like?"

"I don't mind anything that's not oranges, I hate those."

"All right, no oranges got it." "And can you please look for my friend? He might be hurt!" The SkyWing opened her enormous wings and flew away.

Verbena closed her eyes and drifted off in a matter of minutes.

"Verbena? Verbena? Verbena, WAKE UP!!!" Verbena nearly jumped out of her scales in shock. "WHAT?! ARE WE BEING ATTACKED?!"

"No, it's just that I've been yelling at you for the past TWO HOURS!!" The hybrid sat up and shook her head, clearing her thoughts. She was at Crossbill the SkyWing witch doctor's cave and she was on her way to the rainforest.

"Flap your wings. Does it still hurt?" Verbena shook her head. "And I might have found your friend."

A dark blue and black dragon stepped out of the shadows. His face was stained with tears, his snout covered in a bandage. His powerful tail drooped. When he looked up, his eyes lit up with something more than happiness.

"Verbena?" Tiderider said, letting out a sniff. "I thought you died."

Verbena felt her face turning dark purple in guilt. Crossbill stepped backward into a separate cave.

"Are you okay?" the hybrid asked tentatively, reaching out to touch the blue dragon's talon. He flinched, instead using it to wipe his face. "You scared me so badly!"

"Do you want to keep going?" "If it means I'll be with you," he said in a shaky voice. He let out a weak laugh. "I know that sounds corny, but I mean it." Verbena walked over to him and hugged him tightly; he was forced to give in.

"You'll be okay, I promise," Verbena said. "Come on, let's go flying." Crossbill came out of her cave and followed.

Tiderider, Crossbill, and Verbena leaped into the air. The hybrid dragon's wing hurt very slightly, but it wasn't enough to disable her flying.

"Thanks for saving me," Verbena said, wiping her face.

The SkyWing smiled. "It's what I do. By the way, your stuff is back in my cave, I'll give you some more pain medicine for your wing, remember, only take two every day. Doctor's orders." The hybrid dove down to the sky dragon's cave.

Verbena landed and picked up her bags. Crossbill gave her a few more of the medicine leaves, as well as a few cherries, and five raspberries. "Next time, fly lower and stay away from MudWings." Crossbill cautioned. The golden dragonet nodded. "Come on, Tiderider."

Verbena opened her wings and flapped off.
