Verbena sat up, it was dawn, and she had heard a loud noise outside and the sound of loud talonsteps from a big dragon.
Verbena sighed, stood up, put on her pouch, and rushed outside, her scales glimmering in the early morning sunlight. They were pink, pale green, and yellow today, due to her mix of emotions.
Verbena trotted up to the weaving stand, head held high. "Guys, I'm going to leave today so I just came to say goodbye. I hope I'll see you all again soon," Verbena said, looking at the dragons who stood before her. "Delta, Lucidream I didn't get a chance to know you very well, but I can see you both are good dragons from just the two days I knew you."
All the dragons, gold, yellow, green, black, and brown said proper goodbyes. Verbena nodded to her acquaintances, shifting her wings and curling her barbed tail in closer.
Now, I have to say goodbye to my family, Verbena thought grumpily.
But first, I'm going to need a weapon. Verbena went over to a stand and asked where a weapons shop was. "Why would you require a weapon? You don't have to answer that by the way. Anyhow, the weapon stand is over there, by Tails and Scales," said the dragon running the stand.
Verbena smiled at the RainWing and looked around to see if she could find Tails and Scales Bar. There it was, right next to a shop called Weapons, which was, of course, the name of the weapons store.
"Hi, can I see what you have here?" Verbena asked the dragon behind the counter.
The dragon, who was a pale dust-colored SandWing, with more scars all over him than you could count, nodded, pulling out a scroll and passing it to Verbena.
She couldn't read very well, but then something caught her eye, it was a short, curved knife with a dark brown leather band and a cover with designs on it. The price was... twenty-five?! (Or a few gems). For a knife?! Well, it did look nice.
"I would like this one please," Verbena said, showing the SandWing the scroll and pointing at it. The brown dragon nodded and opened a box with some bronze keys from the necklace on his neck.
"Here you go, that will be twenty-five coins. Have a nice day! Just don't hurt anybody, okay?" the SandWing handed Verbena the curved knife and took the ruby from her opened talon.
The hybrid placed her new weapon in her small pouch that she wore. She remembered the day she'd gotten it- or rather found it, mother had bought it, then decided it was too small, or too out of season, or too- well, ugly. Jasper had gone on a shopping day and bought a few things, and decided to get rid of it tomorrow, but then Verbena had found it and kept it.
Now, she just had to say goodbye to her family, and then she would be ready to leave this time (she wasn't going to flake on it today).
With a couple of flaps of her wings, Verbena was soaring over the Scorpion Den, searching for her family's cave. Ah, there it is. Verbena dove down and dug her talons into the sand. Verbena sighed, she didn't know how to put it, her half-brother would probably object to her leaving. Her mother might grumble, then yell and give an excuse to send her away.
"Mother, I'm leaving the Scorpion Den," Verbena said.
"Why?" Jasper grumbled, not looking up
"I feel like the Scorpion Den is too brutal for a little low-class dragon like me. I don't like living here..." Verbena sighed. "Besides, I feel like where I'm going is much better than this."
Arizona stared at his feet.
Jasper sighed a creaky sigh. She hauled herself to her feet and did something no one could've expected. She... hugged Verbena? It was brief enough for her to still be processing what she was doing. The SandWing let go and lumbered away to her small section of the cave and flopped down again.
"Bena? Whys are you leaving?" Verbena was afraid of this. Gila always asked questions that had an answer that was above his understanding level, so she had to word them differently than the actual answer. "Gila, I'm going to go somewhere for a while, but I'll visit and send you letters, alright?"
Gila's wings drooped. "I'm sorry I have to leave Gila, but as I said, I'll write to you and visit okay?" Gila gave Verbena a big heart-wrenching hug.
Verbena released Gila and walked out of the cave, and then shot into the air. It's time! I'm finally ready! Verbena was about to fly off, when Arizona came bounding out of the cave, panting.
"Verbena, wait!" he said. "Hmm?"
"Can we talk for a second?" The hybrid nodded. "You know she loves you, right? I know you think it's for the best... for you to, you know, leave, but it'll probably take years for her to get over it. Did you really mean it when you said you'd visit?"
Verbena's scales subconsciously shifted to deep gray-blue. "Yes," she said. "Yes, I'll visit. It'll be a while, though, if I make it to... where I'm going." She'd almost given herself away. If she'd told her stepfather where she was going, he'd tell her mother and Gila would have a tantrum, demanding to go and see her.
"I'd better leave now," Arizona said, waving his tail at the cave. "Make sure to enjoy yourself!" he added as she soared away.
The hybrid did a joyful flip in the sky, her scales fading and changing to a nice mix of pastel yellow and baby pink. The sun blazed cheerfully in the clear blue sky, cloudless and pretty.
Why did that lizard look so smug? Should she eat it? Nah, then she realized that Tiderider the SeaWing-NightWing hybrid was sitting by her hut.
"Tiderider? What are you doing here?" Verbena asked. "Oh, you know, the usual, chasing lizards, trading a date or two, fighting with Moonsea," Tiderider shrugged. "You?"
"I'm leaving the Scorpion Den, need anything?"
"I just came to give this to you." The dark blue dragon slipped off the gold bracelet with a starfish etched on it that he usually wore on his left wrist. Verbena and Tiderider's scales touched for a fraction of a second as the golden dragon took it and slipped the bracelet onto her wrist.
"It's pretty, I like it. Where'd you get it?" Verbena asked, wondering where he could've found such a thing.
"One of my uncles, he was saving it for a hatching day present for me; Moonsea got a pair of earrings from my mother."
"Thank you. Anyway, I need my things for my trip, I hope I see you again soon!"
"Verbena... I wanted to ask you something."
"Okay, what is it?"
"This might seem weird... but can I come with you? To wherever you're going? Anywhere but here's good enough for me."
"Well..." Verbena scratched her ruff. She could practically hear his thoughts: Please say yes, please say yes!
Well, here we go. "O-okay. You can come."
