Hailee's POV
Somehow we wound up in Chez Quis. Ferris was looking through the reservation book, trying to find a reservation that would suit us. Finally it looked like he found one. I was looking around trying not be awkward. I was kind of nervous and shy. A waiter passed by looking me up and down, checking me out. Cameron noticed and eyed him while wrapping his hand around my shoulder. Once Ferris was done Cameron spoke up.
"Can we please get the hell out of here, this place gives me the creeps. Why didn't you tell me we were coming to a-"
A man walked by which caused Cameron to stop mid sentence. He went around the desk and turned to Ferris.
"Hello, can I help you?"
"You can sure as hell try. Hi, I'm Abe Froman party of four for twelve."
Ferris shook his hand and handed him money, causing the man to wheeze and toss the money to the side. Ferris raised his eyebrows. I was beginning to get nervous grabbed Cameron's hand playing with his fingers, causing me to miss the small smile on his face.
"Is there a problem?"
The man kind of smirked and looked at Ferris as if he was dumb.
"You're Abe Froman?"
"Yes, that's right, I'm Abe Froman!"
"The Sausage King of Chicago?"
His face did a number of looks and I really tried my best not smile. Ferris kind of looked surprised but went with it,
"Yeah! That's me."
"Listen, young man, entre nous I'm very busy here. Why don't you take the kids and go back to the clubhouse."
Cameron and Sloane stared at Ferris as if waiting for his next move. Meanwhile, I slid behind Cameron; gripping the back of his shirt. Ferris was at a loss for words trying to come up with his next move.
"Are you suggesting that I'm not who I say I am?"
"I'm suggesting that you leave before I have to get snooty."
I then wrapped my arms around Cameron, holding the hand I had, giving it a gentle squeeze.
"Snooty?"
"Snotty."
"Snotty?"
I put my head against the wall, when, Cameron let go of my hand.
"Okay, hey Abe, lets go!"
"No, I'm not going anywhere!"
I rolled my eyes and was praying he didn't get caught in his act.
"No! We'd like to be seated!"
"Listen young man, you take the field trip outside or, I call the police!"
Ferris seemed shocked, while I thought we were doomed.
"You... you're going to- you're going to call the police on me!?"
"Yes."
Ferris turned trying to think about what to do, then he got an idea.
"Fine! As a matter of fact, I'll call them myself!"
The snooty man laughed at Ferris.
"Yes! Call the police! This will be a hoot!"
Ferris called the other phone in the restaurant, genius right?
"Here, give me the phone I have another call."
"No!"
"I've had enough of this horsing around, give me the phone!"
"You touch me I yell red! There's another phone around here find it!"
The man started walking off before turning to us,
"I weep for the future!"
I was still behind Cameron while he eyed the man. Sloane looked at Ferris scared as ever. The man stalked off, when Cameron moved closer to Ferris,
"Okay Ferris! Can we just let it go, please?"
Sloane joined in.
"Ferris! Please, you've gone too far, you're gonna get busted!"
Ferris turned around as if talking to himself in the mirror.
"A. You can never go too far. B. If I'm gonna get busted it's not gonna be by a man like that!"
He turned to me and Sloane. Cameron just shook his head and threw something.
"Come on, Abe!"
"Ask for Abe Froman."
Sloane took the phone.
"May I speak to Abe Froman, the Sausage King of Chicago?"
"Abe Froman? Let me check the restaurant, could you describe him for me please?"
"Leather jacket, white t-shirt, sweater vest, devastatingly handsome."
"Hold on one moment."
"Yes, thank you."
The man then press's the red button, when Cameron was handed the phone. The man noticed a different line was on so he pressed the button to switch to it and made a face.
"Mr. Froman, this is Sgt. Peterson, Chicago police!"
The man's eyes widened, and I had to bite my lip to keep from laughing at Cameron's impersonation.
He then lead us to our seats.
"I appreciate your understanding!"
"Don't think twice! It's understanding that makes it possible for people like us to tolerate a person like you."
The man made a face as if he had been insulted, but didn't keep it for long.
"Thank you!"
"Don't mention it!"
We all turned and looked and smiled at him.
He was kind of speechless, but managed to at least tell us,
"Enjoy your lunch!"
And walked away.
Ferris turned to Sloane.
"Darling you were wonderful!"
He toasted Sloane and took a sip of his glass, chewing the ice. Then turned to me.
"Blondie, thank you for being with us today!"
We clinked glasses, and took a sip as well. Then, he turned to Cameron,
"Cameron, dear friend, and you thought we wouldn't have any fun! Shame on you!"
Cameron eyed him while he lifted up his menu to see what he was going to eat. After we ordered Ferris went to the bathroom, which left me, Sloane, and Cameron. Sloane said she had to use the bathroom too, which left me and Cameron by ourselves. Cameron was the first to break the silence.
"So...how's school been going?"
"Oh, uh, well when I don't have a class with one of you guys, it's pretty boring. But, if I have one of you guys it can go by. How about you?"
"I don't know. Any classes with Ferris I don't pay attention and time flies. Then in any of my other classes I'm always distracted by this girl. She barely notices me, which is normal for me, but she's really beautiful and has the most amazing personality."
I stayed quiet for some time I wanted to cry, but I knew I couldn't. I would never allow myself to cry in front of Cameron, at least not all the time. We went back to eating and it became dead silent.
"You okay?"
"Yeah, why wouldn't I be?"
"I don't know, you just seem kinda down today. Are you sure?"
"Yeah, it's just..."
"It's just what Haileebug?"
That was Cameron's nickname for me. He didn't like Blondie, so he came up with that.
"Maybe...never mind."
"No come on tell me."
"French Frye, I don't know...it's kind of a secret to myself."
French Frye was my nickname for him.
"Come on tell me."
"Well, I like this guy. But, I found out he likes someone else and it's kind of crushed my heart. I always knew I never stood a chance though, he's way out of my league."
I felt a lump in my throat, and the tears threatening to spill form my eyes. I swallowed the lump, and blinked a few times trying to hold my tears back. It reminded me of my stepdad had said this morning. I didn't do too well hiding the tears cause one slipped from my eye. I felt a thumb wiping it away and turned to see Cameron's thumb on my cheek. He popped a couple pills and started making faces at me to cheer me up, causing me to crack a grin, which then lead to me busting out laughing. All the people around us were staring. Ferris came back to the table, his dad following him. I hit him and stuck my fingers to my lips. I made wide eyes at Cameron and he saw what I was talking about. Ferris in a very low voice asked me,
"What is it?"
Sloane came out and sat down.
"Your dad just passed us."
We exited the building and sure enough underneath us was Mr. Bueller.
"Of all the 4,000 restaurants in downtown Chicago I could've picked, I picked the one my dad goes too."
Cameron interrupted him.
"We're pinched for sure."
"No way Cameron, only the meek get pinched, the bold survive."
Ferris put his hat on and we all put our shades on.
"Let's go."
"Let's surrender."
"Never."
Ferris started down the steps, and me and Sloane snapped our fingers before walking down. Cameron sarcastically copied our actions before following us down.
Ferris reaches for the door, but was cut off by his dad. He stood like a mannequin, before his father engrossed in the conversation he was having. We somehow all managed to pile in the cab waiting outside, and take off just before Mr. Bueller noticed.
