I looked up at the mansion, with music loud enough to wake the neighbours, pouring out of it.
"It'll be fine," Zion whispered to me, "Let's go in."
Glancing at him, I licked my lips and nodded. Zion would be here, I reminded myself.
Zion Huerto, my best friend since forever. Captain of the basketball team, not someone to be messed with and my neighbour. He's always been there for me, like the time I got bullied, he followed the kid home and beat him black and blue or when I was eight and had my first asmatic attack during P.E. He broke intomy locker to get my inhaler. That, right there, is true friendship.
He smiled at me and led the way into the gigantic house.
I was supposed to meet my boyfriend, Corey, so I started looking for him. Few kids were dancing to the music playing, others taking shots and the rest of them were making out with their partners.
"Welcome, welcome" I heard someone say. Mason Lee, the host of the party. He was one of those jocks who couldn't do without partying, but was an okay guy at least.
"I'm going to go get us some drinks." Zion said while a drunk Mason staggered towards me. He sloppily kissed my right cheek.
"Zephr" he greeted.
"Mason" I answered. When he wasn't looking I discreetly wiped my cheek.
"I saw that." Someone whispered in my ear. I jumped and turned around.
I was met by five grins. My other best friends. Some I've known since preschool, others since middleschool.
There's Rick. He's like the big brother of our friend group. I've known him since I shared my sandwich with him back in preschool.
Peter and Alex, who apart from Zion and I, are very close. They always prank people but never get caught. They are like twins from different parents. They even have the same birthday.
Won and Austin are the mathematical geniuses of our group. They are always at constant competition with each other but nevertheless they aren't enemies.
I smiled back at them but it faded a little.
"Where's Zac?" I asked.
Zac. The baby of our group. He's even younger than me at the age of fifteen.
He is wicked smart for his age and is meant to be in our class but his condition held him back. He was diagnosed with asperger syndrome at the age of ten and is a little slower than others in certain aspects. But it doesn't make him lesser than any of us.
"He couldn't make it," Rick answered " his mom told him to stay home. Biting my lip, I nodded. I looked around and saw my brother, Caleb, flirting with a girl. I shook my head, smiling. Leave it to Caleb to be the manwhore among my brothers.
"I'm back. What did I miss?" Zion asked popping out of the crowd.
"Here's your drink." He said to me. I smiled in gratitude.
"Hey, where's ours?" Alex asked.
"Get your own drink." Zion scowled.
Alex threw a rubber duck he had in his hand at him, while the others laughed at him.
I smiled at their antics while looking for my boyfriend.
Zion wrapped his arms around me saying "Stop looking for loverboy and dance with me."
He started swaying us to the beat of the music.
"You know I'm not much of a dancer." I said following his movements.
"Don't care," he responded " I'm leading."
The guys had dispersed already and Zion and I were among the few dancing.
After a while, I said I was going to look for Corey and Zion went to get water.
Since I had been to Mason's house a couple of times, I knew my way aroud. I searched a couple of rooms, knocking before I entered to see if Corey was there.
"Corey?" I called when I reached the last room. I thought 'what the heck' as I opened the door. There were two people riding each other in there.
"Shoot! Sor..." I started to say until I recognized them. Him specifically. My boyfriend. Corey.
"What the he-" he started to say before he saw me. He sat up straight with wide eyes sending the girl tumbling down.
"Zeph...." he said looking between me and the girl. "Please."
I couldn't breathe. It hurts. I tore out of the hallway. I rubbed at my chest but the pain wouldn't go away. I ran out of the house, not caring who I bumped into. I hardly registered the tears in my eyes. But no matter what I did, the pain wouldn't go away.
