The morning Samuel was discharged from the hospital, Maxime was there to pick him up. No doubt the hustle of running a company was overwhelming him, but his major priority was to be by Samuel's side.
"Welcome home," Maxime sneered. "Make yourself comfortable." He said presenting a bunch of fresh flowers to Samuel. One of the many set that was used to decorate his hospital room the whole weeks he laid there. Maxime couldn't stop smiling and blushing at the same time.
Samuel collected the flowers and inhaled the fresh scent. He hugged and kissed Maxime and if there was a slightest doubt that he didn't care, it was gone. His eyes roved around the new house. The interior was superb.
He almost couldn't believe that he had been gone away from the world's eye for roughly eight weeks, only to return to what seem like a different reality altogether.
"Before I forget, that car parked out there is yours, here's the key." Maxime placed the single fancy automatic key to a brand new Peugeot Coupe in Samuel's palm. Samuel looked at the piece in his hand, lost - speechless.
"Are you alright?"
"More than anything," Samuel said. "I missed you Maxime. I was so afraid I would never see you again."
"I'm glad you're alive too." Maxime blinked. He led Samuel to the soft sofa and they both sat down.
"Tell me everything," Samuel said. "What's been happening while I was, you know, gone. Last thing I remember was convincing Henrietta to take Hussein to the court. What happened to Emile?"
"She is confined to a mental institution. It appeared she had everything to do with the accident and the death of Rochelle."
Samuel stared back into Maxime's eyes. "Rochelle was right all along. She really didn't want to loose you, even after she was gone. She protected you."
"I know, it's unbelievable."
"Joelene?" Samuel asked feigning seriousness. "She isn't dead right?"
"No!" Maxime laughed. "You have to call her. Here is your phone," Maxime pointed at the device on the table. "She and Hussein will be joining us later in the day but before that -"
Maxime searched his suit pockets and brought out a small black box. "I have never done this before so excuse my awkwardness," he mused.
Samuel watched attentively.
"Would you have the honor of living with me in this magnificent home? It is yours actually - but I'm asking you. So do you accept?"
"How much did you spend on this?" Samuel muttered. Not quite sure where Maxime was heading with this awkwardness.
"Just answer me, don't ruin the moment."
"Maxime..." Samuel scrunched his eyebrows. "This is too much."
"Hey don't be a cry baby."
"You give me a car and now a house... Its too much."
"You deserve every good thing this life has to offer. And I will make sure of that."
"But -"
"Shhhh!" Maxime hushed at Samuel who remained quiet. "I'm going to ask you one more time, Samuel. Do you accept to live with me now and always?" Maxime opened the small case revealing a set of two golden rings. He smiled coyly.
He had no other words to say right now. All he wanted was to forget the past and spend the rest of his future with this man.
Samuel's eyes widened as he peered into the small ring case.
A proposal? An engagement? Which one exactly?
He wiped his eyes. He placed his hands in Maxime's and shook his head. He still felt little pain in his abdomen when he talked but nothing compared to the happy tears swelling in his eye.
"I'm speechless," he stuttered.
Samuel squinted his eyes and stared at Maxime for the longest time. His mind went blank, all he could do was study man sitting beside him.
Maxime raised his soft brows anticipating an answer.
"You're wearing a suit, Maxime and you look incredibly handsome."
"Stop," Maxime's body wracked with laughter. "You are supposed to answer my question."
How he missed Samuel's wits and cockiness.
"I'm going to ask you one last time. Samuel, will you...?"
Samuel fell into Maxime's arms and let himself go. What better way to spend the beginning of the rest of his life. Almost getting teary, he whispered.
You stubborn nut head...
"Yes Maxime. I accept."
"You have no choice, do you?"
Maxime wrapped his arms around Samuel and buried his face in the nook of his neck. He breathed deeply inhaling Samuel's scent, savouring the warm rosy aroma with a tinge of lavender perfume.
He knew he was home.
