Renjun sighed deeply and ran his hand through his hair. What was he doing? Two days ago a boy had approached him and told him to meet him at this address for a very important reason and at first he had laughed yet here he was, at the address given to him questioning his sanity.
To be honest, Renjun was not sure what had brought him here, maybe it was the desperation in the boys eyes or the strange obligation he felt to be there, but here he was standing in front of a cemetery trying to convince himself to go.As a criminology major, Renjun should know that he could quite possibly be murdered, but as a psychology nerd he felt it was his duty to help whoever had asked him to be here. No one would just randomly ask you to meet them at a graveyard unless they wanted to kill you or they needed help.
Finally convincing himself, Renjun took the first steps forward into the cemetery. It was peaceful in a very chilling way. A light breeze raced through the blossom trees that grew throughout the graves, bringing a sense of beauty into this dismal place. Some graves were old; sinking into the ground and fading away, Renjun stopped occasionally to read some of the names and dates on them.
Since he was young he had always enjoyed imagining what the past would have been like, so seeing graves from 1942, 1997 and even one from 1876, brought an odd sense of calm and nostalgia to him. It reminded him of the slightly faded face in his memory called Kyu, who would bring him to grave yards to sit in silence and look at the graves.
"Thank you Taeyong, I'll keep that in mind. Say hi to Jaehyun for me."
Renjun was startled when a voice from the other end of the cemetery brought him out of his thoughts. He watched as a boy around his age walked towards him, engrossed in his own thoughts staring blankly at two bouquets of flowers he held in his hands. Renjun almost immediately recognised him as the boy who told him to come here.
"Who was that?" Renjun asked when they neared each other. The boy was startled and nearly dropped his flowers but quickly recovered, a look of relief replacing his previous blank expression.
"I thought you weren't going to come." He said, happiness filling every crevice of his words. "It was a little creepy the way I introduced myself. I'm Sunwoo by the way."
Renjun shrugged, although he had been thinking the same just minutes before.
"It's alright. Although I would like to know why I'm here."
Sunwoo sighed but instead of responding he began walking through the rows of graves.
"I might break down if I have to explain anything, so it's probably better that I show you."
Renjun simply followed until they had reached two recent looking graves, situated right next to each other. The boy still didn't speak and the two stood in silence looking at the graves before them.
"Hi again. I know I came yesterday, but I brought someone with me this time." Rejun started when Sunwoo began to speak, not to him but to the graves. "It's been a while since either of you have seen him, but I thought since today's the ten year anniversary you might want to see him."
Renjun observed him as a silent tear slipped down his cheek and his voice began to shake. There was another moment of silence when Sunwoo began talking again.
"This is Changmin and Juyeon, I'm not sure if you remember them but Changmin was your caregiver in the orphanage before you got adopted. Juyeon was my caregiver. They died in a car accident about ten years ago when they were bringing me back from visiting a potential family. I was in the car with them."
Faint memories of a man with a tall neck and bright smile filtered into Renjun's head. Trips to the beach, being taken to school, meal times and much more began flooding to the forefront of his mind. Images of holidays and movie nights with nine other boys and eight men put themselves together and he too let a few tears trickle down his cheek.
"I remember." Renjun said finally. "I remember him, I used to call him Kyu. We used to come to cemeteries to get away from the world and to look at the old graves. I remember you as well, and the others. But they are not as clear."
Suddenly a bouquet of flowers, one of the ones Sunwoo had been holding was flung into his hands.
"Their yellow pansies and daisies. Daisies where Changmin's favourite flowers and pansies represent distant love."
Renjun nodded and together he and Sunwoo laid the flowers onto their caregivers' graves. The mood was somber and Renjun felt more tears escape his eyes as he mourned the caregiver he forgot he had. Soon enough both boys were sobbing and Sunwoo pulled Renjun into a tight hug.
