"I want to get circumcised", Yasmin finally dropped the bomb on us. I almost choked on my orange juice opting to spill it out through my nose instead and then bursting out in laughter.(what a waste of some good orange juice). Yasmin, my little sister, ever rebellious and stubborn since she started walking, was scaling newer heights of rebellion with each passing day. Okay, perhaps here's where I say a little about my family.
My dad,Abdullahi Omar, God bless him has 9 children with my mom,Amina Bilala. Okay, too many kids, yes? When you don't have internet and TV you are likely to turn to other forms of entertainment we all know too well. Of the nine 3 are girls. Zeinab, the eldest daughter followed by Milgo and finally Yasmin. I'd tell you about the 6 boys but not today, not here. Maybe someday when I decide to tell you about that thing that Samatar did that no one but me knows(I'd probably need to be on my 6th glass of whiskey to tell you this story). My educated parents defied societal pressure to cut my sisters. Good people, my parents. The two turned out okay despite Arera Fatuma's insistence that they would fool around if they weren't cut.
You need to umderstand that my people(Garreh) are very traditional and cultural. It's in our DNA. We are wired that way. Okay, am not pointing fingers at mother nature here. I guess, I can point fingers at my ancestors. They pillaged and raided neighbouring tribes for cattle.
The Garreh are an afro-asiatic community scattered among the semi-arid regions of Kenya,Ethiopia and Somalia. They lead a nomadic life and are very good pastoralists.
