"now, you know the rules. seatbelt, read the signs, don't drive too fa-"

"fast. yes mom, i know." the boy interrupted his mom with a soft smile.

"i just want you to be safe, my sweet boy"

"i know, mama. i love you so much"

"i love you too dani, text me when you get there" Keri Seavey replied, as her son walked out the door. he was on his way to his friend Jacks house. it was two days before junior year and they wanted to be prepared together.

it would be their transition from wimpy lowerclassmen, to loud and proud upperclassmen, it was a big year. and the fact that daniel got his license was even better!

the happy brunet texted his friend, letting him know that he was on his way. jack and daniel only lived 10 minutes from each other, but keri would much rather have her son drive than walk alone.

starting the car, daniel peeled out of the drive way and onto the wet, almost empty street.

switching on the radio he sang along to the music, turning down the right roads and stopping at signs and lights.

just a couple minutes away from jacks house is where the tragedy occurred. his phone vibrated and pinged, letting him know he received a message. quickly glancing down, he opened his messages to read jacks response.

as soon as he looked up, all he saw was head lights and then the world around him seemed to burst.

glass everywhere, smoke from the front of the car quickly clouding the air. the airbag punched his face as he hit the steering wheel, a giant flash rendered his vision.

as soon as the two cars had collided harshly, daniel had jostled. his phone had fallen to the floorboard, him accidentally clicking his mums name in the process.

"daniel? did you make it to jacks okay?"

"daniel?"

"mama" daniel choked on a cry, his head ringing. what he could see was dizzy and spotty, making him panic.

what if he was dying? if he was, he didn't like it. it was disorienting and scary. he felt like he couldn't breathe and he was sure he was falling out of consciousness.

luckily the person driving the other car was able to call an ambulance.

"17 year old caucasian male, car crash. right lung punctured by a glass shard that entered the body, three broken ribs, highly concussed. bleeding from the ears, sign of brain injury. bruised trachea and broken nose, hindering his breathing. someone get him in for a tracheotomy stat and surgery to remove the glass from his lung" daniel lulled in and out of consciousness, his body feeling both leaden and light as a feather.

"but what about the concussion? it's dangerous to perform on a concusses patient"

"shut it intern, and get him in! do you want to save this boys life or not!"

daniel opened his mouth to speak but he couldn't. he couldn't move, he couldn't speak. his eyes eyes shot open blearily and he had tears falling down his cheeks. a kind face looked over his and shushed him.

"shh, it'll be okay" they said, running a hand through his hair. he still couldn't move. was he paralyzed? he couldn't feel his legs. daniel was sure he was paralyzed. oh no. he'd have to be in a wheelchair and people would pity him and he wouldn't be able to drive-

daniel quite quickly fell out of consciousness again. the doctors set him up an iv and pumped him with anesthesia to do emergency surgery then pain meds for when he woke up.

except he didn't. he had minimal brain activity and seemed to be in a coma. which made sense considering his brain injury.

the doctor told keri seavey that when he did wake up, he was likely to suffer from memory loss. he also said that he wasn't sure how long the coma would last and that he would be able to hear people.

a few days after the incident the full accident and hospital report had come in, stating that daniel was in a coma and after a few test on his responsiveness to the joints, he seemed to be paralyzed from the waist down. there was no injury to his spinal chord so it was likely that it was all psychological.

"oh my sweet boy" keri choked, sitting next to her pale son, his brown hair darkly contrasting against his snow white skin.

"wake up soon, mama misses you"
