Eddie stared into the small, bland room before him. With boxes in hand and a few by his feet, the boy stepped forward and ambles toward the bed. As he settled down on the wooden furniture, it let out a soft creak -- and with that, Eddie sighed. He leaned against the hard, cement walls behind him and took a deep breath.
Eddie let his eyes roam around the room, examining every little detail. The space was painted in a light, cream colour. There were two beds -- one of which Eddie was situated on. Beside each was a small, white bedside table. On the opposite end, a large dresser sat. Much like every furniture in the room, it was too, made of timber. Sunbeam emanated from the window betwixt the desks, softly illuminating the dorm with its golden glow. Upon further inspection, Eddie took notice of the soft, brown rug the floor was covered in.
The boy closed his eyes, slowly familiarizing himself with the new atmosphere and surroundings. Though Eddie always longed to leave his so-called "home," he was afraid of the changes that would take place. He was afraid to start anew, meet different people and to let go of the life he used to have. Despite the fact that Sonia has abused him for quite some time, he was still going to miss her. Eddie knew that she was a bit delusional, but he was so used to his mother being around.
'Maybe I'm just used to her presence.' The boy thought, his head filling with every possible reason as to why he thinks that way.
"Oh, my dear Eddie!" Sonia shouted, running towards her son. The white, tiny handbag she carried was aimlessly thrown midair. Sonia wrapped her arms tightly around Eddie, her face blotchy and messy. Tears — along with makeup — was steadily running down her cheeks.
Eddie was surprised at his mother's outburst. As he was patting Sonia's back awkwardly, he looked at the door. Several people passed by, the look of concern evident on their face. He felt the embarrassment creep up onto his cheeks, resulting in him turning his gaze away.
"Mommy, I'll be okay." Eddie said softly as he moved away from his mother's grasp.
Sonia reaches into her pocket and pulls out a handkerchief. "You won't be at home anymore!" she replied, blowing into the cloth in her hands. "I don't know how I'm going to deal with it."
"I'll call you every day, okay? Don't worry, ma."
"What if I just live near your-"
Eddie sighs, the feeling of exasperation filling him to the brim... again. "Mommy, that's unnecessary. I have to live on my own now. I'm 18, ma — I'm a legal adult."
Sonia huffed at his son's response. She turns her gaze away from Eddie, clearly trying to control her emotions — for once. Needless to say, he was a bit surprised at his mother's emotion.
Eddie was about to say something, but then a soft knock draws his attention.
"Excuse me, can I come in?"
