"Mama?" Peter asked tentatively as he walked into her bedroom - Maria was at work so he wasn't worried about walking in on anything again. "You know how much I love and appreciate-"
"What do you want Peter?" She asked teasingly.
"Can we get a puppy? I already asked Miss Potts and Mr Stark and they said as long as you say yes and pay for it they wouldn't mind having one around the compound. I asked everyone to make sure they aren't scared or allergic so it's really just up to you." He spoke, a little too quickly for most to understand but Natasha was used to his rambling.
"No." She went back to the book she was reading.
"What? Why not?" He whined.
"Because I said so." The redhead sighed, placing a bookmark in the book and placing it on the bedside cabinet.
"Please?" Natasha raised an eyebrow at Peter who slunk back.
"You aren't responsible enough Peter, I'll end up doing all the work and between Avengers, SHIELD, you and Wanda; I don't have time for that." She shuffled to sit on the edge of the bed, gesturing for him to sit beside her.
"I swear, I'll do everything!" The brown haired boy promised, Natasha laughed - not harshly nor mocking but not quite amused either.
"But you can't. You go to school, you work in the labs, you swing around as Spiderman helping the little guy. When do you have time either?" Peter went to speak but the redheaded spy carried on. "And you can't expect Wanda, Maria or anyone else in the building to look after it. You can get a turtle or fish or something small and low maintenance but a puppy is too much work."
"Okay mama." He walked out of the room looking glum, Natasha felt guilty but knew it was for the best and he'd be back to his happy self soon enough.

"Hey mama?" Peter walked into the training room, Wanda trailing behind him. "I thought about what you said about me not being responsible enough for a puppy." Natasha looked up at that. It'd been a few weeks, she thought her son had dropped the subject.
"And?"
"You're right. But I really want one, and how am I meant to prove that I can look after a dog if you won't let me get one?"
"And if we get one and you can't look after it, we have to take it back. Do you think you can do that?" Wanda's hand was on Peter's shoulder comfortingly, he had tears in his eyes and hopefulness on his face.
"It will really help with my recovery from being kidnapped. I won't be so scared to sleep if I had a puppy to protect me." He pouted.
"No, you'd stay up all night playing and cuddling with it. If you still feel scared to sleep, you can come to my room or Wanda's or she can come to yours. Peter, what's this really about?" Wanda was now hugging Peter - but this time for her own need to be close to him. She'd been a lot more affectionate since he came back and every time his kidnapping got mentioned she needed to remind herself that, unlike Pietro, he hadn't died and was right there.
"I just really always wanted a puppy but was too nervous to tell you until now." Natasha knew he was lying but didn't know why.
"Okay, I'll talk to Maria." The two teens faces lit up as they bounded over to hug her. That's when Natasha realised the full story - Peter was trying to convince her but it was for Wanda, who was still struggling without Pietro. "We'll think about it."

"So, the kids want a puppy." Natasha brought up as the two were getting ready for bed.
"Have you finally decided to let us get one?" Maria glanced up.
"You as well?" The redhead rolled her eyes as a small sigh escaped her.
"What?" The brunette tilted her head.
"You're in this with them." Maria watched as Natasha ran a frustrated hand through her hair before dropping her hand to her hip and sending a small glare Maria's way.
"Of course. Who doesn't love puppies?" The brown haired woman chuckled lightly before peeling away the duvet so she could lie down.
"Maria-" Natasha copied her movements and they both sat against the head board.
"Baby, I know you're worried, but with all of us to look after it, it will be fine. It will make them both feel more secure and Wanda thrives under Peter's unconditional love for her, the puppy will give her the same love. And how cute would it be to see them playing with a puppy?" At the last sentence, Maria used a voice one would use when addressing an infant.
"You know Wanda's nearly an adult and Peter's in his mid teens right? They aren't little kids." Natasha reminded her - Maria sighed, she thought that would work.
"No, but they act like it. Why are you so hesitant? Did you watch Marley and Me or something?" Slowly she slid to lay down, Natasha followed.
"No, no, it isn't that. It's just... Well, everything is so perfect right now. I have a son and daughter who get on with each other and are actually well behaved and respectful most of the time. I have you. There's no major threats at the moment." Maria understood Natasha at the worst of times, but when they're as strong as they are at the moment - it was like Natasha was wearing neon flashing lights with her opinions and emotions on it.
"You're scared something will come along and mess that up?" The commander left her voice soft and understanding, making sure her girlfriend knew she wasn't mocking her.
"Nothing was ever perfect in my life until Peter. And now everything is falling into place and I don't want something to jeopardise that." They were fully lying down at this point, on their backs and staring at the ceiling - or the ex KGB assassin was, Maria was staring at Natasha like she hung the stars and the moon.
"A puppy will only make things more perfect." She offered.
"What if we have to kill it or something?" Natasha twisted her whole body to face Maria.
"Why on earth would we have to kill it?" Natasha went to respond but Maria continued. "Nat, baby, there's nothing to worry about. The house won't come falling down if we get a puppy." Maria grabbed the younger woman's hand
"No, but the house might fall down on it." Natasha expressed her fears.
"Peter, Shuri and Tony are reinforcing every wall, every pillar and every ceiling with Vibranium - it will be fine."
"So, we're getting a puppy?" Natasha asked, still unsure but unable to come up with any arguments that could win against her girlfriend's logical reasoning.
"Yeah, we're getting a puppy." Maria responded excitedly before kissing Natasha soundly.
