Jungkook felt something fuzzy tickling his nose and his eyes started to flutter open. His vision at first was disoriented but then his vision focused on a orange tail lazily swinging from one side to another in front of his face. His vision then shifted downward as he saw the same orange cat curled up in his lap staring at him.
Surprise!! Jin thought as he looked up at the human.
Jungkook simply stared.
"What are you doing here? I told you to go." Jungkook said.
Jin meowed and stood up from his position. He walked the short distance and rubbed his head against Jungkook's chest. He kept rubbing and meowing softly against the human.
Jungkook didn't want the cat near him but for some reason he didn't push the cat away. He really liked the warmth the cat provided as his chest was warming up. For a moment, he didn't feel lonely nor was the silence of the house suffocating him. His right arm slowly came up and his fingers came into contact with the soft fur as he scratched the head of the cat.
Jin let out a soft pur as the human began scratching his head and below his chin. The human's fingers were like magic as they worked their magic into relaxing Jin.
Jungkook's eyes started to water again as he brought Jin closer to him and hugged him against his chest.
Days passed and the day Jungkook was dreading came to be. He dressed as formally as he could as he dressed in all black. Today would be the day that they would bury his grandma. His chest felt tight as he remembered that his grandma would no longer be with him. He was brought out of his thoughts as a small meow was heard and that was when his gaze landed on the cat sitting on his bed. A small smile appeared on his lips as he thought back four days ago, when he decided that he was going to take care of the beloved cat of his grandma. At that time, he was so determined to at least keep a piece of his grandma alive and with him that he decided to keep the cat. Looking back at that, he concluded that that wasn't a wise choice since the cat was a stray and not the official pet of his grandma. After the death of his grandma, it was decided that he would go back to live with his mom. He had packed his clothes and belongings as well as the orange tabby cat. His mom had been surprised but she didn't say anything since she wasn't in any mood to argue with her son. Once they were inside Jungkook's room, the cat had jumped down from his arms and started to investigate his room. The cat seemed pretty entitled to Jungkook as he saw as the cat claimed his bed as his own and fell asleep in it.
Back to the present. Jungkook went to pet the cat and very softly said, "Thank you for being with me. I need to go say my final goodbye, you stay here in the meantime. I'll come later for you so that together we can go to grandma's house so that you can also say your goodbye."
Jin meowed and watched as the human walked away. Once he heard the front door close, he jumped down from the bed and walked around his new house. His new home, huh. It had a funny sound to it. Jin had never considered himself as a domestic house cat but here he was. He could always escape this new life by simply leaving and never coming back but for now he would stay and see how things played out. Besides, he simply didn't have heart to leave the human boy alone. And it had nothing to do with the boy claiming him as his pet although Jin secretly loved the feeling of belonging. He had always wanted a home and a human to call his but unfortunately, no house had ever accepted him and no human was ever to his liking. Sure, some humans petted him and fed him but not one human had told him they wanted him in their home for forever. Jin ended back in the boy's room and jumped on bed, he needed to take a nap and the sun was directly shining upon a spot on the bed which he deemed worthy of a place for his nap. He curled on himself and fell asleep as the sun's rays warmth his skin and cuddled him to sleep.
Jin felt himself be observed and very lazily opened one eye only to find the human boy looking at him from the doorway.
"Your awake. Let's go to grandma's." The human boy said and Jin began to stretch his body as his tiny bones cracked and his skin stretched. God that felt good. Jin got up and jumped down and waited at the human's feet and with all the authority he had, he meowed. He demanded to be carried by the human.
Jungkook lifted an eyebrow and incredulously looked at the cat.
"You have to be kidding me. I am not carrying you. Come and walk your chubby ass downstairs." Jungkook said as he turned around. He would have walked away if it weren't that the cat had clawed at his pant and was refusing to let him go. Jungkook looked down at his leg, "you're serious aren't you?" Jungkook heard the cat meow in confirmation and with a defeated sigh, he bent down and carried the cat downstairs and towards his mom's car.
Once they were outside his grandma's house, Jungkook carried Jin outside and together they stood. Jungkook couldn't force himself to take a step forward. The house held many memories and he knew that if he walked inside that house, his grandma wouldn't be waiting for him inside.
Jin looked at his human and he saw conflict and fear clouded by sadness all interpreted through the boy's eyes. With an elegant leap, he jumped from the human's arms and scurried towards the open front door, where he saw the human's mom enter through.
Jungkook's eyes widened and he followed his cat inside. He was ready to reprimand his cat and tell him that he should have waited but either way, he walked inside. He saw the cat go into his grandmother's room and he followed. Inside, he found the cat clawing at shoe boxes his grandma had in the floor of her closet.
"What are you doing? Don't do that." Jungkook said as he tried to pick up the cat.
Jin hissed at the human and with determination, he kept clawing at a particular box. He needed to take the cover off.
Jungkook saw that the cat kept clawing at a particular box and on closer inspection, he realized that the box was not a shoe box but an ordinary cardboard box that was faded by time. He gently pushed the cat to the side and then picked up the box. He opened it and his eyes glistened with unshed tears. He walked towards his grandma's bed and soon after a little orange cat was beside him.
Jungkook stared at the pictures one by one and his tears started to fall one by one. So many memories. There were some pictures he had never seen before and he was surprised and filled with nostalgia and happiness as he started to relive his life through the pictures. Once he was done looking through them all, he looked down at the cat laying beside him.
"Thank you."
