Holland looked down at her left hand and twirled her engagement ring around on her finger. She'd only been wearing the diamond for a few weeks and she still wasn't quite used to the weight of it on her hand.
Her whole life was a mess at the moment. Not in a bad way, it was just a bit overwhelming. It seemed like every moment of her time since she had flown home from Tokyo, arguably the best trip of her life, had been scheduled.
She had media appearances and business meetings and on top of everything else she still had practice. She had to keep her skills up so that after all of this calmed down she would be an able and ready coach.
She had a feeling her life would feel a bit less jumbled if Calum were able to be home with her to enjoy the high that she was still on following their engagement.
She missed him. Even months later it was still so strange to not be surrounded by his constant presence the way she had been during quarantine. She missed his soft snores and the way he always pulled her closer to him in his sleep, occasionally muttering a few words that clued her in on his dreams and often included her name. She missed the way his cologne seemed to linger in the air when he was home and now that he'd been gone from the house for weeks she could barely detect it. She missed him joining her in the shower and their midnight activities, but mostly she missed just being able to hold him and have him hold her as she drifted off to dreamland every night.
She'd known distance came in the deal when she had started dating Calum but at the time she hadn't known they would get so serious and she had been so preoccupied with her own dreams that the distance had almost made things easier.
Now her brain was only half occupied, the interview questioning and photo shoots were mind numbing most days giving her plenty of time to let her mind wander to thoughts of missing Calum.
As if he could sense that she needed to hear his voice her phone vibrated within her pants pocket and she pulled it out, smiling at his name and picture on her phone screen.
"Hey you." She said, smiling ear to ear.
"Hi love! How are you?"
"Same old, same old. Still part of the dog and pony show that is the life of a gold medalist post Olympics." She told him.
"Oh yes, such a troubled life you live." He laughed at her.
"Stooooppp, it's boring and I just miss the gym." She said honestly.
"So go train then." He told her.
"I don't have anything to train for now." She said, her lips pursed.
"Train for yourself." He reasoned. "Or, I mean you can still go for the National team and Worlds, right?"
"Yeah, I could. I don't know it just doesn't seem like it would be as satisfying after winning Gold in Tokyo though, I feel like I want to go out on that high."
"It's your decision, Holls. I'm proud of you no matter what you decide."
"Enough of my first world complaints." She told him, trying to clear her mind and he chuckled. "What are you guys doing today?"
"I honestly haven't even looked at the schedule, I barely know where we even are." He groaned. "I think we have a stupid radio thing, then maybe an acoustic set."
"Hopefully it won't be too loud." She said making a terrible attempt of a joke and Calum laughed though she was sure it was more at her bad humor.
"I miss you." He confided and she could hear the longing in his voice which made her chest ache.
"I miss you too, Cal. When are you coming home?"
