Sam looked outside the diner window and stared at the blue-grey sky. One or two cars drove past, heralding the start of a new day in the cold, sleepy town of Southgate.
He and his brother Dean were two of the first people in the diner along with a gruffy looking man carrying post mail who seemed to be getting a quick breakfast before work.
The waitress came over carrying a tray of eggs and sausage for Sam and a double cheeseburger and fries for dean who ignored the woman's quip about eating that so early.
''Let's go Sammy, eat up,'' Dean said with a mouthful of fries. ''You want to go grow up strong and healthy, don't you?'' he said with a mocking tone.
Sam gave him a dark stare.
''What?''
''You seriously won't even think about me letting me go?''
''Not this again-''
Sam leaned forward, ''the YS Science fair is in Augusta, Dean, we can take the bus and-
''No, no, no,'' His jaw clenched as it always did when he was trying to be serious. ''I told dad we'd stay in Southgate until his hunt is over.''
''Yeah but Dean you know how long his hunts can last, the competition is only on a weekend he won't know-''
''Come on dude, you heard him last time,'' Dean frowned. ''No slip ups, those were his words.'' He picked up a fry and placed it back down in a way that seemed pained. ''We can't afford to disobey him now.''
''Remind me again why that is,'' Sam hissed back.
Shame and regret washed over his brother's face, and he immediately regretted what he said. It was just so unfair; he couldn't have a normal experience and do something he found interesting because Dad and Dean said no. Still though he knew he went too far.
''I said I was sorry for that, what more do you want me to do?'' His brother blushed.
''Nothing, I'm sorry I brought it up.''
''No really Sam, is there something you wanna say to me?''
Just then, the waitress showed up and asked if everything was ok, Dean told they were fine and she left, her eyes wondering over them obviously having heard a bit of their conversation.
''Did Dad say why he wouldn't take us with him this time?'' Sam asked. It wasn't what he wanted to ask but he didn't want to upset his brother, he could tell that Dean's mistake was eating him up.
Dean relaxed, ''he said this one might be a little heavy, a bit too dangerous.''
''Why, what's he hunting?''
''Whatever it is ripped off the heads of three 30-year-old males and drank their spinal fluid,'' he shrugged. ''So, I dunnow. Skinwalker? Werewolf?''
Sam frowned, ''neither of those feed on spinal fluid.''
Dean raised his hands nonchalantly, ''Well it's dad's case, so I'm sure he's got it.''
''Speaking of Dad'', he dug into his pocket and pulled out his worn leather wallet. Opening it, his fingers shifted through the cash while frowning. ''The cash he gave will probably last only two weeks, less if I get my prescribed cases of beer.''
''Thought dad told you to lay off the beer,'' Sam had a sip of coffee.
''I am,'' Dean replied, ''he didn't say stop.''
Sam rolled his eyes.
''I saw an auto shop nearby our motel, maybe I can get a job while we're stuck here, make some extra cash.''
