Rory Smith was awake before her alarm clock rang out into the quiet morning. Her brown eyes flit up to the walnut ceiling above her and she wondered where she would find the strength to get up today. She lay in bed for a while her mind wrestling with all the things she had to do; she had study for the Algebra exam on Monday, finish her English Assignment, oh they still had to find a band for the fall dance.
Oh shit, she realized. I forgot to finish my History essay for Mr. Anthony.
She rose from her bed and strolled over to her bedside mirror and ran a hand through her hair. Christ, I look exhausted.
Her eyes flit onto her calendar. October 12. She always found it difficult to get any sleep close to that day, every year for the last three years she found her days leading up to it were filled with tension and worry and then it would pass with nothing happening and the cycle would begin again. That was why it was better to stay busy, keep her mind off of it.
After October 12, she'd feel better. She had to.
Rory made her way down to the lounge where she could hear the TV and whispering voices of Mr. and Mrs. Walsh.
''Jesus,'' she heard him say. ''I thought this nightmare was over.''
''I know,'' Mrs. Walsh sighed. ''I can only imagine what'll go through Rory's mind hearing this.''
''What are you guys talking about?''
They both turned to look at her, Mrs. Walsh's mouth a perfect O –shape while Mr. Walsh looked away, uncomfortable.
''Good morning honey,'' her lips formed into a feeble smile.
The Walsh's were friends of Rory's parents and had been taking care of her ever since the incident. They were good people who gave her a home at a time when everyone else was treating her like she was a freak.
''Good morning,'' she leaned against Mrs. Walsh's chair, ''What's going on?''
The two exchanged a worried look before Mr. Walsh nodded his head toward the TV.
''The Sheriff's Department found a human arm out in the woods two nights ago.''
She felt her stomach sink, ''What, is it real? Did someone dig up a body or-''
He shook his head gravely, ''As far as they can tell it was fresh.''
''What the fuck!''
''Language, please.''
She looked incredulously at Mrs. Walsh. Language was what she was worried about right now.
''Well why?'' she blurted out. ''Is it a prank or is it-''
''He's still locked up Rory, you have nothing to worry about.'' Mr. Walsh was trying his best to calm her down.
She opened her mouth to say something but was cut off by Mrs. Walsh. ''Rory please, let Sheriff Rogers worry about this, you worry about Calculus. ''
''I'm certain it's just a prank,'' Mr. Walsh tried to take a sip of his coffee but set it down having lost his appetite. ''We have nothing to worry about.''

At school, the severed arm and its missing body was all anyone was talking about.
''Did you see the news this morning?''
''...my dad almost wouldn't let me come.''
''...just like the Birch road murders''
