The more Sam spoke with Max and Dennis, the more he learnt about them. Both their fathers were friends and worked for the local logging company, which was how they met.

Dennis was into comic books and video games; he especially liked a game called Doom which he apparently played dozens of times. He was also an amateur artist and showed Sam his sketchbook of drawings filled with mostly Superhero characters wearing different costumes. There were also a few drawings of women in lewd poses which he quickly skipped over.

Sam found Max to be even more Somber than he was, he carried himself with a quiet confidence and didn't say much about himself except that he was hoping to follow in his dad's footsteps and become a lumber worker once his dad finally followed through and started his own construction company.

They asked Sam about his own family and as usual, he was careful not to relay too much. His father was a travelling Salesman, he had told them and was away on work but that he would return after two weeks.

Sam was about to tell them a funny story about the time when dad took him and Dean out for a shooting lesson, when the classroom door burst open revealing a girl about their age with dark shoulder length hair tied up in a red scrunchie. She had a light freckled face and her brown eyes were wide with excitement. She ran into the room before stopping in front of their chair.

''You'll never guess what-''

She caught herself when her eyes fell on Sam.

''Who's this,'' she jerked her thumb toward him.

''That's Sam, he's new here,'' Max explained, running a hand through his hair. ''Sam this is Amanda.''

''Hi,'' Sam waved awkwardly.

Amanda gave him a casual nod before sitting down.

''So, you'll never guess what Lisa just told me,'' she continued.

''What?'' Dennis asked.

''Where were you in Math?'' Max wondered.

''I'm about to explain both,'' Amanda held out her hand. ''So, this morning I ditched math and hung out with Lisa-''

Dennis laughed, ''Rebel.''

''Totally,'' she agreed. ''so, you know how Lisa's dad works at the Sheriff's Department?''

''Yeah,'' the two boys said in unison.

''Well, apparently last night they got a call from Freeman who lives out in the forest and when Sheriff Rogers got there...''

She paused for dramatic effect.

''They found a girl's severed arm.''

''What?!'' Max exclaimed.

Sam's ears pricked up, ''Did you say a severed arm?''

''Yep,'' she smiled. ''Isn't it cool?''

''No,'' Dennis shook his head, ''definitely not cool.''

Max laughed, ''Typical Amanda, your screwing with us, right?''

''No, I'm serious.'' she said, her eyes wide and excited.

''Wait, what do you mean, a girl's arm was found in the woods,'' Sam asked.

''I mean they found an arm in the woods,'' she said slowly as though explaining to a toddler.

''No,'' Sam sighed irritably. ''I mean where exactly was it found, how close to town, was the arm ripped or hacked off?''

The other kids in the room exchanged strange looks, and Sam knew he had said too much.
