The half-breed (working title)

The lost wolf:

When Valentine regained consciousness the house was gone, there was nothing but ruins; she tried to call out but instead of a voice there were howls, yips and yaps. She thought about her human body and tried to shift, she looked down unable to understand why she couldn't find her feet, or hands and it was just her paws, after a few tries, her wolfs instincts kicked in and she called out waiting for another wolf to answer; there was nothing but silence. Slowly she walked away from her home, instinct telling her to find safety in a pack; Valentina was starting to get tired when she caught a scent that reminded her of home. She started running and then fell over her own paws and face planted, with a little yelp of annoyance Valentina sat up and was nose to nose with a wolf; he was very big red wolf and was clearly in a position of power. He growled the cub and after a slight hesitation Valentina licked his face and rolled onto her tummy; he spoke to someone via the mind link and picked her up by the scruff of the neck.

When they got back to the village the wolf walked into the pack house and shifted, after grabbing a t-shirt and shorts he called out, "Alpha, Luna, I've bought the cub". The Alpha and Luna came out of the office, kneeling they looked at the cub, the Luna Sarah looked at the young man who had brought her in "Adam, where did you find her"? "a few miles from where Hame used to be; I don't know if she could have been from there; but I don't see a cub or child surviving for over two years alone", the Alpha Ben looked sad "we lost so many of our brothers and sisters that day; only a very strong person could survive the shift this young" he looked at the cub and used the alpha-tone "shift" he commanded; Valentina tried and then the pain she felt was unbearable; the sound of bones snapping and braking, she howled with pain that she had no voice to describe; Valentina welcomed the blackness that followed. Ben, Sarah and Adam were shocked and horrified by what they saw, the cub half shifted a small human body with a wolf head then as she passed out a wolf body with a child's head; Ben shook his head and tears started to fall "I will never do that again! Did you see the pain I caused that child"? Adam and Sarah nodded unable to speak, unable to offer comfort as the waves of pain continued to roll off the child/cub, after half an hour or so Valentina returned to a cub. It took two days for her wake up, Adam had claimed her as his child and Ben and Sarah had added her to the pack, they hoped it would be easier for her to change back; but if not at least they would be able to talk via the mind-link.
