"I worked like 50 hours this week cause some people are just so fucking irresponsible! We all know we have to report by next week Monday, so why do people decide to go on annual leave, a week before the deadline? How did their leave get approved anyways?" Mel fumed, rolling her eyes. She took a sip of her cranberry vodka after uttering her long complaint.

"That's work life, Mel. Sometimes we just have to sacrifice our own time to get the job done. Plus, not like we can say anything. We just started. We're at the bottom of the chain. We need to do what they tell us to do," Nat tried to assure her.

"But still... It's unfair! I had to spend my own time to work on their tasks. I don't get paid for overtime," Mel spat. Nat offered Mel the cheesy chips on the table. Maybe eating those sodium infused potatoes would calm Mel's nerves.

In the midst of this, I rubbed my knuckles together under the table and stared at the glass of water in front of me. It wasn't my first-time hearing Mel and Nat complain about their 9 to 5 jobs, but after hearing it couple of times, I got tired and bored of listening to it. It was the same story every time we meet up.

Maybe I should be more sympathetic towards their complaints.

Maybe I should join Nat in reassuring Mel.

Am I not a good friend?

Beside Mel, Alex tried his best to poise a very awkward smile. He eyed me carefully, as if he was trying to read the emotion on my face. I felt his gaze rested on me, concerned, and I forced a smile, signalling him that I was alright.

"Guys, it's Friday night. We shouldn't be talking about work," Alex suggested. The silver watch strapped on his wrist glimmered under the dim lighting of the restaurant.

Nat nodded. "Why? Friday is supposed to be the day we release our stress!" Then she turned towards me who was downing my $9.50 glass of water. I told myself to finish every single drop of this fresh mountain water that I ordered.

Everything in the restaurant's menu was a rip off. I could tell it was not good value for the money when they described fried rice in their menu as fresh Indonesian jasmine rice with in-house soy sauce mixed in a charcoal wok. Like who would've guessed, right?
