"have nice day" the office lady told me
"you too" i walked out the office leaving the school
getting in my car i started it. today i was finally able to visit my mom and her lawyer's i was nervous it could go two ways my mom cones home or my mom serves her full time. i had been prayed for this since i was a kid but we usually ended up disappointed. either way it goes imma still see my mom in person so i guess that's good. i made it up to the correctional center she was placed at.
"lord please don't disappoint" i said checking in
i put my phone, keys, and wallet in the bin walking through the metal detector. once i was cleared i got my visitors badge and was escorted to the family room. this room was were all the inmates could talk to their lawyer and obviously see family and friends.
"hey ma" i hugged her tightly
"hey baby" she rocked us back and forth
it had been six months since the last time i saw my mom in person, a fight had broken out between her another inmate causing both of them to lose visitor privileges which fucked me up. her once short hair had grown out and had some gray streaks but she still looked young and healthy.
"how you been?" she asked
"good,how are you?"
"been staying out of trouble?"
"yes ma'am" i nodded it wasn't the while truth but it also wasn't a whole lie
she looked at me squinting her eyes that's how she knew i was lying.
"so you and your little friend didn't rob somebody on the avenue?"
oh shit
my mom had connections on the outside she made sure my grandparents and me were taking care of and that nobody fucked with us. something she always told me is that even if she was behind bars or six feet under she would still make sure i was good. if she knew that i was robbing people than she knew about me selling.
"or how you're selling weed like a lil corner boy" she gritted
like usher im so caught the fuck up. i could tell she was pissed but i knew she was more disappointed than anything.
"i raised you better than this. robbing and selling is what got me in here and you go and do the same shit?! you have a life ahead of you, you have a football career you are jeopardizing. this shit ain't cool this isn't going to make your little girlfriend like you or the other little girls. and i know for a fact my parents raised you to be better than me to not make the same fucking mistakes i did!" she ranted
"you have so much you are putting on the line for a couple hundred. not only are you putting yourself, your friends, your girlfriend, but your grandparents in a position that they can get hurt in but if they cover for you and your mistakes they'll be messing up their lives too. trust me i know and the feeling that guilt will forever be with you, these streets don't love you they don't even love themselves they could care less if you or anyone else around you dies" she finished off
"hello how we doing today?" her lawyer Monica asked
"good" we both said
"okay let's get down to business"
"so the d.a is offering one more year and five years off probation" she said
"just one more year you've already served half of you sentence anyways and with the probation you have to check in with your p.o once a month and that's that. Nina look at the bigger picture you would be able to see your parents and your son without guards, without these handcuffs, you would be eating this nasty ass food or dealing with five minute showers or the other girls bothering you. you would be free the only thing is you cannot have any connections with anyone from your past or they will throw you back in her"
"okay i'll take it" my mom nodded
"i wanna go home" she smiled
"okay i'll let the d.a. know and you'll go in front of the judge tell them the plea and we'll be good. this is great news" she looked at me
i nodded rubbing my neck
"Rivers times up"
"i love you and i want you to make good choices stay away from that boy you hear" my mom grabbed me pulling me into a hug
"i will i love you too"
"thank you Monica" she hugged her lawyer before blowing me a kiss and leaving with the guard
"Raheem i am going to do everything in my power to get your mom home okay don't give up on her" she touched my shoulder
