-------------------Malfoy was no longer speaking with Harry, and he gave absolutely no reasoning for it whatsoever.
Harry had expected some sort of answer about whether or not Malfoy was going to agree to stop his games, but instead he had gotten the cold shoulder when he brought it up.
Now he was sitting with Lavender on his bed, relaying the day's events to hopefully gain some sort of opinion in helping him decide what move to make next. They were getting ready to sleep, some time around ten or eleven. Harry hadn't checked the time due to his own fretting.
"No response," Harry recounted, throwing his arms up as if to hint at the fact that it was something that Lavender should have felt deeply about.
"He's not going to," Lavender told Harry for the umpteenth time. "He's Draco."
"I still at least want to know if he's going to do something, or, in this case, nothing."
"Then ask him."
"I did! I went up to him and said: 'have you made your decision?' and he didn't respond. I don't know how I'm supposed to handle this."
"Well, I don't know what you should do, but if I were you I would just ignore him," Lavender suggested. "He's not worth your time. You made the inaugural agreement with him so that he would leave us alone."
"But this is an opportunity to stop his rein of terror. If we can get him to stop breaking people's hearts, then we have the upper hand."
"In what?" Lavender asked, looking disheartened with Harry's stubbornness. She fluffed the pillow that she was leaning up against. "The war's over," she reminded him. "There's no reason for you to be fighting anymore."
"But... but Malfoy and I-"
"You fight," she interjected. "I get it, it's your thing. But that doesn't mean that you can't find other ways to settle your differences. Maybe you could make a truce or something, if that'll settle your mind."
"My mind doesn't need to be settled, but I need to know if I'm helping people."
"You did help people. You've been helping people. You give so much to everyone. Just because you're not actively resolving issues, or finding ways to make life perfectly fair, that doesn't mean that you're a bad person. Malfoy needs to solve his own problems by himself, and if it takes ignoring you to help him right his wrongs, I think you're going to have to sacrifice your obsession-"
"It's not an obsession! I just want to make sure that no one else is getting hurt like you did."
Lavender sighed deeply, choosing her next words carefully. Harry was very easy to set off, she had learned that from experience. She felt that it was important to keep him as calm as possible, because trying to reason with Harry Potter was like walking in a minefield blindfolded at night.
"I know I was hurt, and I know it still hurts, and I know how much it pains you to see me like this, to see anyone like this, but sometimes you just have to take a step back and let things take their course naturally. Malfoy's doing a good job of leaving people alone right now; I think you should be recognizing that behavior instead of what you think could happen somewhere down the line."
"And when something bad happens?"
"Then you deal with it in whatever way you see fit. If Malfoy comes after one of your friends, then you'll stand up for them, but since he hasn't there's no reason to be hostile. I understand that you want to help, and I know that you feel like you need some sort of project, but changing the way that Malfoy thinks only hurts the people that he experiments on."
