Link was the youngest recruit in the Hyrulean Forces. At age 14, he was already ahead of nearly everyone. They had no choice but to move him up a few ranks. Link spent most of his time as a soldier. Hyrule seemed a bit too peaceful, so there were never really any issues. For now, he was mostly doing basic duty. He still had to train and spar with the others however, just so he wouldn't get rusty. Link barely had any spare time, because of his job. It would be a lot tougher seeing his friends, such as Malon and Saria.
Along with several other soldiers, Link lived in a building within the borders of Castle Town. While he left most of his belongings back in Kokiri Forest, he brought with him his weapons and other equipment. What was once a sword the size of a dagger, his Kokiri Sword was now the size of the Master Sword after a ton of upgrading thanks to the city's blacksmith. His mirror Shield that he found in Termina was also upgraded, with the face no longer visible.
His peers had great respect for him, and would look to him as a leader despite his young age. They would have some great conversations during guard duty, and would usually talk about their lovers from back home. Link's thoughts would immediately dart to Malon during these moments. He felt very lovesick, and that he had to act fast before another soldier noticed her. On some afternoons he would see her delivering milk with her father. Link couldn't hold back, he had to confess. Only problem was how awkward it would be if her father was around.
One day he found her alone, delivering milk. She looked rather tired and stressed, so Link immediately ran to her. She told him how her father broke his leg on the farm, and was currently unable to assist her. Link decided to assist her, even though he had some duties. A little bit of trouble couldn't hurt. While helping with deliveries, Link's heart was thumping, and he was feeling pretty sweaty. When the two were finished, Link asked if they could hang out for a while before she returned to the ranch. The two of them caught up, with Link telling her about his life as a soldier and Malon telling him about her simple life on the ranch. They both sat down outside the Temple of Time, and Link finally decided to tell her. He confessed, and felt like his soul just left his body. Malon was silent for a few seconds, but then smiled, teared up, and jumped into his arms. She was waiting for this day, and was so happy that she began singing. Before departing, they hugged, and Link closed his eyes and gave her a kiss on the cheek. She blushed, and then took off after bidding farewell. Link had the face of somebody being possessed by the strangest poe.
His peers weren't very pleased when they saw him, and he did get scolded by a higher up. His punishment was to help clean Hyrule Castle's horse stables. Link took this punishment with pride, because the stables shared a similar scent to Lon Lon Ranch, where she lived and worked. Link started whistling Epona's song, as he was shoveling the poop and feeding the horses some hay. Link learned his lesson about goofing off, but had no other reason to now that his main mission was complete.
