Chapter Four
"WHEN IN DANGER OR IN DOUBT, RUN IN CIRCLES, AND SCREAM AND SHOUT."
― Herman Wouk
[A week later...]
My eyes scanned the crowd as we trotted into the arena, our opponents walking to the left of us. Baby Lux was in my arms...until I had to and her over to Lou- who was standing in the V.I.P section along with Harry, Liam, Niall and my family. No one knew why Zayn wasn't here.
My heart pounded in my temples as I took a deep breath. As we huddled into a circle, coach gave us one last speech. "Remember to give the ball to Alyssa." Coach told us. She looked at me, "Captain.... anything you wanna say?" She patted my back and walked out the circle.
I rubbed my hands together. As I spoke, I could see my breath. "Okay guys.....we've been preparing for this for almost two months. In practice everyone was amazing. Lets see if we can bring that energy from practice to the field." I look at the all the players, "This is what we're going to do... .number 12,15,13 and 20 I want you to be the four wall defense almost mid field. And er- 10 and 5 mid field, exactly. And the rest of you, I want you to always try your best to give the ball to me or one of the mid- fielders or who ever is closer to you. Alright?" I waited for everyone to nod their heads. Natalie didn't. I ignored her, "Okay lets go!" We all whooped. Together we took off our red shirts and revelaed our black and white jersey's that had Yorkshire on the front. The girl's shorts stopped at our thighs- but a little longer- and the boys' had theirs all the way down to the knees. We also had black and white long socks. On my back was the number 17. My ponytail was going down my back. The- almost exactly blonde- highlights were died at the end of my hair. Putting my ponytail on my right shoulder, I bit my lip and stepped into the center of the field.
My opponent's captain was a female also. She had pink lipstick on and her blonde, wavy hair was in a long ponytail- almost the same length as mine. Her blue and white jersey had the number ten on the back. She smiled at me, then rolled her eyes.
The ref stood in the middle of us. "Alright ladies I want..." Just when he said that the crowd got very loud. I didn't even think that was possible. I looked back at the Ref. "Okay number 17 you ca-" He stopped.
There was feedback from the microphone somewhere above us. I looked up at the screen. Everyone did. It was my mum. She had a microphone up to her mouth, "Alyssa..."
"Mum?" I said to myself.
"...Sweetie we have a surprise for you!" She squealed and the screen turned off.
I looked back at my team mates so my back was to the entrance we came from. I gave them the what is she talking about look. They all shrugged. Looking back at the boys at the V.I.P section everyone had a smile on their face. "What's going on?" I yell over to them. Harry pointed behind me.
Then I knew. The microphone made another noise again. I looked at the screen but it was focused on me. "Bug," I heard a man's voice say. It was familiar but I haven't heard it in a while. He chuckled into the microphone,"Turn around bug..."
I looked down the field. A average height sized man was walking to me, wearing an army fatigue uniform with combat boots. A warm feeling came over me. I let out a big gasp as my feet ghosted upon the floor. "Oh my god!" I kept repeating that over and over. Everyone in the crowd was saying"Awww." He dropped his duffel bag and met me halfway.
I jumped into his arms. He handed someone his microphone. He held a bouquet of flowers in his hands as he hugged me. I held his face in my hands and looked at is grey eyes. My dad, Troy, might have had bruises on his face and a scratch by his lip, but he was the same man: My dad. He spun me around. I felt tears sting in my eyes. "I missed you dad!" I yelled. My arms were around his neck.
