Maya's (pronounced My-uh) POV
I grabbed my phone off the counter and jumped into my car. The rules of our community are pretty simple. When you turn 18, life becomes one big hide-and-seek game. If you are a hider and you get tagged, you die. I was confident I would get hider. My whole family was hiders. My parents, and my older brother Brady.
I was a little worried because if I got Seeker, I wouldn't get to see my family again. I would have to go live in the Seekers District. Since I didn't get one yet, I could live with my parents in the Hiders District. I was a little worried, but as I buckled my seatbelt, the anxiety turned into excitement.
I pulled up to the Hider District Town Hall, and I saw that most people were lined up. I saw my best friend Abby in line also. She was at the back of the line so I knew she had recently got there. I turned my car off and got out. I locked the door behind me and ran up to Abby. "Boo!" I yelled and shook her shoulders.
"HOLY SHI- oh Maya you scared me," she said, jumping like 50 feet in the air from shock. I laughed. "Hey Abby!" I said and we hugged. "I can't wait to see what I am," she giggled. I nodded. "yeah me too! What do you think you're gonna get?" I asked. She shrugged. " I hope I'm a hider so I can stay with my sister." She said a little sadly I rubbed her shoulder. Her parents had died from seekers on the way back to the hospital when they brought her home. Her sister had picked her up and ran before the seekers could get the two of them. I knew the story well. She had told me it many times before. She lived with her older sister Lexi.
We had light conversation after that. The line was long, so we had a LOT of time.
