Chapter 15

(Kaila)

"Come on, slow poke! We'll never reach the lake at this pace" my dad's teasing voice was paired with his classic Cheshire grin, always the jokester. I gave his shoulder a little push.

"It's not my fault I was born with freakishly tiny legs, that blame is entirely yours." I whined. He stopped and pretended to put on a thinking face.

"I'm pretty sure I share the blame with your mother, I couldn't make you all by myself. She helped, if you know what I mean." He wiggled his eyebrows at me. Heat flooded my cheeks.

"Ew dad! That is so gross! Bad enough my room is down the hall from you two teenagers!" My dad, though an accomplished lawyer, was such a teenage boy. Both my parents were oddly still fresh in love, though they were getting into their twentieth year of marriage.

I took a good look at my father. His aged face was still handsome, and his peppered hair was neatly trimmed. The laugh lines on his face gave away his personality.

"So why the walk? Don't get me wrong I love the fresh air, but why all the suddenness?"

"There are things I need to explain to you and your mother and I agreed now was the time." All traces of humor gone he stared at me. I rarely saw this side of my dad, and it really startled me.

I could see the edge of the lake trough a break in the trees, but instead of starting for it like I thought he would, he painfully gripped my arm. I looked at him in alarm and saw the panic on his face.

"Kaila, there's no time to explain. I want you to climb this tree just like i taught you when you were younger. Don't make any noises until Uncle Joe comes and calls for you. Always remember that I love you and your mother. Go!" His tone had my body moving to his command though my thoughts were a mess.

I climbed to the very top like he had taught me, and sat on a branch. The tree was thick enough so that no one could look up and see me, but thin on the inside so that I could make out my dad's figure. I tried opening my mouth to ask what was going on but no sound came out.

That's when I heard it.

Two more voices joined my fathers. I will never forget what they sounded like. They were cold, emotionless, saying things I didn't understand.

"Well, well, well. Look what we have here Talon. Isn't this perfect. Declan will love to see you again Tom, and those lovely woman you call family."

Something akin to an animal growl sounded from my dad, and I strained my ears to hear the conversation.

"He'll never touch them. They're mine."

"It's too bad you won't be around much longer to protect them. I have express orders from the big man to kill on site. Where is your little girl? I smelled her just a few minutes ago, and she would be the perfect prize to bring back to Declan." I could see my dad's form shaking, all I wanted to do was to scream for him to run.

He never got a chance.

Within one blink and the next the man named Talon had disappeared and in his place was a giant bear-like creature. A soundless scream caught in my throat as the beast ripped into my father. Bile curled in my stomach as I smelled his blood in the air.

I slumped against the tree as my father's body went still.

He was dead.

"Kaila, wake up!" I awoke with a start to find Logan's worried face above mine. He opened his mouth to say something to me, but I interrupted him. Covering my mouth and clutching my stomach I ran to the bathroom until everything I had eaten was up in the toilet. When my stomach contents were empty, I continued to dry heave.

I hadn't had that nightmare since I met Jonathan.

Logan was rubbing soothing circles into my back, and I felt comforted. I had been raised an only child, and never really got close enough to anyone to feel like I had a sibling. With Logan I felt I had a big brother to lean on.

When I was done, I weakly stood up and brushed my teeth. Logan held my weight as he led me to the bed. Before he placed me on the bed I shook my head in protest.

"Where is Jon?" I studied Logan's face, but he had put on an expressionless mask. My heart started pounding.

"Logan?" He sighed.

"You need to rest."

"The hell with resting, I want to see my mate." As soon as the words were out of my mouth he took my arm and led me down the hall. I knew we were going back to the bed where he got his bullets taken out. I shuddered at the memory. His screams of agony will remain with me forever. We slowed as we got closer and I could smell the sweet scent of morphine beyond the closed door. I took a deep breath before pushing the door open.

The sight before me had my knees buckling, and I would've hit the floor if Logan hadn't have caught me.

Jon was lying there motionless. His torso was bare, but wrapped in gauze and I could see where he had bullet holes due to the patches of blood on the crisp white bandage. I could barely make out the movement of his chest as he breathed and I could tell even with the morphine he was in a lot of pain.

"Luna! You shouldn't be in here" the doc came rushing in.

"And where exactly should I be? My mate is lying there motionless and unconscious, by his side is where I belong." I started for Jon, but Logan held me back. I turned to glare at him and was surprised when he flinched back. With a pained look he released me.

Turning back to Jon I shuddered at the thought of all the pain he must be in. Soon there was a blanket wrapped around my shoulders and I gave Logan a thankful smile. The doctor walked around to the other side of his bed and started changing out drips as I placed my hand gently on top of his.

Instantly his body went into action, arms curling around me pulling me close. His nose nuzzled my neck. Mumbling his approval while the rest of us were shocked. The doctor was astonished he was awake, Logan went to pick me back up, while I snuggled deeper into his embrace. I looked up and found crystal blue eyes swirling into mine, with a grin on his face. Lightly tapping his chest where I knew there were no bullets I scowled at him.

"You are an idiot for so many reasons, Jonathan. When you get all patched up and better I will be giving you a hiding." I tried to stay serious but the shit-eating grin he gave me was hard. He leaned down slowly and gave me a scorching kiss.

"I can't wait kitten."
