Unlike Alex, Jay clicked with Colleen right away. His easy smile and rapid-fire jokes made Colleen like him right off the bat. Some fans speculated that Jay was trying to bond with Colleen just so that Corey would like him better. However, that was quickly disproved by Corey, Jay and Colleen in various interviews. "Shawn and I hired Jay because of how skilled he is at the drums. We kept him on because of the bond he wanted to create so quickly within the band." Corey said in one interview with Loudwire.
Jay confirmed this in another interview: "When I auditioned to be the band's drummer, I was just looking to get in at the time. Then when I got hired, I was really happy to see that all the members of the band were really friendly and welcoming, and I wanted to return that friendliness if possible."
Colleen, who was in the interview with Jay, follows up: "Yeah, Jay was super stoked to be in the band and he really wanted to be an official member. I remember him and Shawn talking, and I heard Jay ask, 'So when do I get a mask!?' And Shawn said, 'Let's get you through a few concerts before a mask, okay?'"
What that all boils down to is the fact that Colleen and Jay bonded over being band members, not because Jay wanted to impress Corey. Don't get it wrong, though, Corey is quite happy that Jay joined and that he's getting along so well with the other members. He's also noticed that since Jay's been in the band, his skills have improved (not that he wasn't good before). Both Corey and Colleen believe that Jay is earning his keep, along with Alex and Tortilla Man.
