Aubrey and Aidan had graduated high school a year ago, and they now owned a small apartment together. This particular night, the two had an argument over who got to eat the last cookie. Stupid, to Aidan, but Aubrey seemed pretty serious about it.
She hadn't spoken to him at all today, and she even refused the bacon he had made.
"Aubrey, please talk to me." He said, shortly after a quiet dinner.
"I don't know what to say. I'm sorry." Aubrey bit her lip and turned her head away so that she faced the window. It was already almost midnight.
She rose from her armchair and went off to the guest bedroom. Aubrey normally shared a bedroom with Aidan, except when these rare arguments occured.
Aidan soon went to bed as well, although he tossed and turned in Aubrey's absence. Finally, he got up and trudged to the guest bedroom. He knocked.
"Aubrey? I'm sorry, I can't sleep." He turned the door knob, realizing quickly that it was locked. He sighed, rolling his eyes. He decided to make no more apologies. He walked to the dark living room and turned down the air conditioning. Aubrey couldn't stand the cold, even in the heat of summer, she would curl up in a blanket when she was in the apartment. He tiptoed back to bed, waiting under his blanket, his eyes open.
Sure enough, he heard the door creak open.
"Are you awake?" Aubrey asked.
"How could I not be?" Aidan sat up, turning toward her. Even in the dark, he could tell she was shivering.
"It's cold." She admitted. Aidan smiled. He had been successful.
"Well, come here." He said, patting the spot next to him. Aubrey hesitated.
"I'll make some more cookies tomorrow. This time, you can have the last one." Aubrey smirked.
"We can split it." She said. The girl jumped into bed, curling up beside Aidan. She leaned against his chest, where the steady pounding of his heart calmed her. Aidan kissed her head.
"I love you."
"I love you too."
