-Soldier's POV-
There was no time to lose. The hospital was being infiltrated, now, by even more of the infected. All we needed now was a quick escape, but everybody was scattered and completely confused. I held Torcher in my arms, being followed by the pig and the player.
They both still seemed skeptical on whether or not I could be trusted, but by this point, none of that mattered. The two told me their plan to get the ingredients and get out of here before we were on the move. We had limited time, so making a rushed cure might not be the best of ideas. Being quick was our only option, though. It's do or die. If we fail, we'll get infected, and that's not happening today.
The hospital was like a maze. It wasn't just the twisted halls that made it confusing, but also the scattered supplies and carts that kept trying to block us. By the time I realized I had no idea where we were going, the player took the lead and led us right up to the exit.
Before we left, they shouted, "We have everything we need! Get to the exit!"
And with that, we were out and into the cold night air.
"Where are we going?" I asked.
"Back to the outpost."
My eyes widened.
"My name is George and this is Player. Zizzy and Pony should be coming out soon along with two of our friends."
"You mean the zebra and pony, the two that stabbed all the other soldiers?"
There was silence for a moment as we kept running farther and farther along the pavement.
"... yeah."———
-Zizzy's POV-We hadn't heard from Daisy or Giraffy in a while, but judging from the increasing number in crashes and heavy footsteps, they may have run into some trouble. Suddenly, I got a cold chill down my spine.
"Are you okay?" asked Pony.
"I just had a sneaking suspicion..."
"Should we go find the other two? We haven't seen them in a bit."
"No..."
"How come? They could be in danger!"
"I just don't think it's right. Something must be wrong."
Pony quickly swerved to the left and came back out from a room holding a vial.
"Well, that was quick!" I remarked.
"There's just one to go, then-" Pony began before being cut off.
"Get to the exit!"
"They must have found the other vial! We should get going." Pony said.
Once we found the exit, I turned for a second the catch a glimpse of a small group of people closing in on us.
"Oh, hey! Giraffy, Daisy, come on, we have to go!" he shouted after them.
Their eyes were covered by darkness, and once they stepped into the light, we saw the soft glow of dark eyes.
"Wait..."
I grabbed the collar of Pony's shirt as he stood there, frozen, and pulled him forward.
"Come on, they're already gone!"———
We ran down the road, as fast as we could, until we caught sight of three figures. No, wait... There were four of them. The green figure turned around, burning a hole in my soul with his bright yellow eye. His face was almost expressionless, but I could feel the anger and hatred in his gaze. His running slowed until he stopped with the others to meet us. Worry and fear laced George's nervous expression.
"Where are the others? Don't tell me they're still stuck in there!" he asked, as if he were trying to will their safety.
"I'm sorry but they... they got caught." I said, breaking the news.
George looked to the ground for a second before shaking his head, as if he were trying to brush off all his negative feelings.
"More importantly, Torcher needs help." said Player.
They redirected my gaze to Torcher who was sleeping, soundly, in Soldier's arms. His right arm was bleeding horribly and his face was cut and bruised.
"How did this happen?" Pony asked, frantically.
Soldier turned to look away from us for a moment, his eyes looked distant, almost unreachable at this point. I didn't know what to do. We had nothing to treat him with, and for all I knew, his arm might've been broken! Player broke the brief silence when they put their hand on Soldier's shoulder.
"It wasn't your fault, there was nothing you could've done to stop it." they reassured him, earning a small smile in response.
"We should get going though. We're so close to reaching our final stop, then we can end this all."
"You're right, there's no point in dwindling on the past, now. Our only move now is to go forward!" I said, trying to lighten the mood.
Even if I tried to make things better, I still couldn't help but feel guilty. I could've made the wrong choices. Our friends in the city could all be infected, now, including both my sisters, and Daisy and Giraffy were already infected from my poor reaction timing. I don't think I deserved to be comforted. It'd be better if no one even tried cause it would only be out of pity, anyway.
The others started turning to leave as I just stood there, staring at the ground.
"Hey..." someone said, making me look up.
Soldier stood in front of me with Torcher still in his arms. I was prepared to be yelled at, talked down on for my poor choices, but to my surprise, his voice was calm and positive.
"It isn't all your fault." he told me.
"W-What?"
"These are unprecedented times, aren't they? Someone had to lead all these lost people to the end didn't they? Besides, you kept Torcher safe for me until I came back, right? That's something to be proud of in my opinion, so thank you. I owe you one."
My eyes almost started filling with tears. For a moment, I thought I could see Torcher smiling too. I couldn't help but smile as I wiped away my tears and looked back up.
"We're in this together, now. On the same side. We should also get going before we all get caught."
Just briefly, I felt all my worries and stress melt away.
"Alright."
