It took me a few hours to decide if I should go to the club. Nick said he went on at seven, and was 6:30 when I walked out the door. I'll go to the club, apologize, and then get up and sing with him. I found Mom in the living room. "Mom, can I borrow the keys?" She gave me a look. "What for?" she asked. "I have to go see Nick," I said. She pointed to the kitchen. "They're on the table," she said. I grabbed the keys and ran towards the door. "Be careful!" Mom called. I ignored her and ran to my car. Driving with one leg is scary, especially at night. I didn't know how I did it, but I got my license. And it want just cancer perks.
Using the GPS on my phone, I drove at ridiculous speeds to the club. About halfway there, my phone rang. Not recognizing the number, I answered cautiously. "Hello?" I said. "Mackenzie? Mackenzie?" It was Liza, Cherry Days's guitarist. "Hi," I said. "What's up?"
"Where are you?" she asked. Her voice sounded worried. "I'm on my way to the club, why?" I've never even met Liza and she's already calling me. "Is Nick with you?" she asked. "Nick?" Why does she want to know where he is? "Nick left before me," I told her. "He should be there."
"Well he's not," she said. He's not there? "What?" I asked. She repeated what she said. I didn't know what to say. "Well, I'm not sure where else he could be, Liza." I could tell she was getting nervous. "I'll call him and see where he is," I said trying to help.
"I already tried to. He's not answering. Maybe if you call he will," Liza said. "Well I don't think that will work either," I said with a sigh. "Okay," she said, wrapping up our conversation. "I'll let you know if he comes." I smiled. "Thanks. I'll do the same," I said and I hung up. I pulled onto another street. Halfway down the road, I saw a huge group of police cars. I slowed down and noticed that there is also firetrucks and an ambulance. I pulled up closer and realized that the car had smoke pouring out of it. I couldn't see the car, but my phone rang. It was my mom. "What's wrong?" I asked when I answered. "Mackenzie!" she cried. "Where are you?"
"I'm on my way to the club," I said. "Is Nick with you?" she asked. "No," I said. "Why is everyone asking me that?" Mom started breathing heavily. "Are you on a street with a bunch of firetrucks?" she asked. "Yeah, why?" I asked. "Do not get out of the car," she said. I hung up. I got out of the car. A police officer tried to stop me, but I ran to the car. I recognized it. A black Chevy. I couldn't move. I looked over to my right to see two paramedics lifting a body into the back of the ambulance. As I looked closer, I saw who it was. All what I could do was scream. I cried out his name, dropping to the ground on my knees, watching helplessly as the ambulance sped away. My voice came out as a whisper. "Nick."
