CHAPTER TWO:
THE DISAPPEARING ACT OF 1991

THE SUN PEAKED OUT BEHIND DAISY'S BRIGHT YELLOW CURTAINS, CREEPING INTO THE ROOM AND AGAINST HER PILLOW.

Daisy let out a soft groan, sitting up and rubbing her eyes as the sun warmed the left side of her body.

She heard her mother shouting downstairs and took a glance at the clock on the wall -- she'd overslept. Daisy groaned, falling back against the pillow with a loud thump. She loved the zoo and she loved her brother -- but she'd so much rather stay in bed all day and read a book.

A knock sounded on the bedroom door and Daisy sighed. "Who is it?"

"Me."

Daisy rolled her eyes, tossing the blankets to the side and walking to the door, opening it with a blank expression. "Happy birthday, Duds," she told her brother.

"You're not ready yet?" Dudley asked in exasperation. "Come on, Daisy! Piers will be here soon!"

Daisy blinked, turning and shutting the door in his face as she got her clothes on -- her new sundress, all floral and bright -- sliding a headband over her hair to push the loose waves from her face.

When she finished brushing her teeth a few minutes later, Daisy hurried downstairs and frowned at the gifts on the table. An impressive amount of presents stood proudly in the center, and a small plate of bacon and eggs -- they still looked warm, Harry had probably just finished -- covered the table entirely. Where was she supposed to sit?

Daisy shuffled behind Dudley and around her father towards the food, grabbing the plate and holding it in her hand, taking a piece of bacon.

"Happy birthday," she heard from behind her and Daisy turned with a touched smile.

They didn't exactly like each other so his good intentions made her heart swell. "Thanks, Harry," she said, offering a piece of bacon. Harry glanced at her parents -- so preoccupied with Dudley, they hadn't even noticed Daisy -- and grabbed a small piece, stuffing it in his mouth.

"Thanks."

She shrugged him off and put the plate back on the table, looking around for her presents.

"Thirty-six," Dudley scowled, pointing at the presents. "That's two less than last year."

Daisy grabbed one with her name on it, pulling it to her and placing it on the floor. She spotted another under three of Dudley's and rolled her eyes at his words. Last year, Daisy only had twelve presents -- and one of them was an accidental Christmas present that her mother took away to give her on Christmas.

"Darling, you haven't counted Auntie Marge's present, see, it's here under this big one from Mummy and Daddy."

"All right, thirty-seven, then."

"Still more than me, Duds," Daisy commented lightly, looking at the accumulation of presents. After the day prior, she didn't expect too many presents -- and was right in her presumption. Around ten presents, not that she minded, and her parents' head swiveled towards her.
