TW: Blood, death

The lights in STAR Labs were dimmed, Caitlin's hand shook as she held the device, she had made a promise, a promise she couldn't keep. Deep inside Frost darkness was growing, and Caitlin didn't know how long she could resist the familiar temptation before more people got hurt. Her phone lit up with Barry's number.

You don't even bother anymore
You cut to the bone
Pick up the phone
To hear my swan song!

Barry sped around Central City, he didn't care if it depleted his speed, he needed to find Caitlin before she did something she would regret. By the time he had reached the lab it was too late, frost covered the tables and a syringe lay broken in a puddle of meta cure.

I'll admit I'm impressed
By your vanishing act
Place your bets on your best guess
On when you're coming back!

Barry searched the building, he suddenly found himself trapped in one of the meta cells. Caitlin's hair was white, and her eyes a icy blue not their normal brown. She pressed a few buttons causing the doors of the pipeline to close. Barry banged on the glass, begging her to come back and think of what she was doing.

Draw the curtains
Take the stage
Smoke and mirrors underway
Hold your breath here comes the turn
This is where we all get burned!

Barry was plunged into darkness when Frost shut off the power generator, the back up one keeping the meta dampers online. Carla came up to the Cortex and tried to reason with her daughter, but Frost ignored her and an ice blast from her fingertips knocked Carla unconscious.

Promises are broken
Tell me are you happy now
Drowning in the hourglass
I guess our time ran out

Caitlin tried to fight against her darkside, but the monster inside kept dragging her further into her mind. She was only able to watch, horrified, as Frost hurt her friends, her family. She had tried to kill Frost, and she was paying the ultimate price.

You don't even bother anymore
You cut to the bone
Pick up the phone
To hear my swan song.

Barry slunk down in the cell, what was he supposed to do. Frost knew all of them personally, their strengths, their weakness, who they care about. He didn't think there was any way to get Caitlin back, not with how differently Frost was acting, compared to when she was working with Savitar.

You don't even bother anymore
You left me alone
I'm on my own
Tell me where we went wrong

While she was distracted by Allegra, Cisco was able to get past Frost and turn the power back on.

Should I turn on the floodlights
To shine in your eyes
Just to get you to speak
And explain why you let it die

Joe opened the pipeline and Barry's cell. Barry had a grim look on his face he knew what he had to do. But he didn't like it.

This new chapter in your life
Read it over once or twice
Burn the pages not the bridge
Sew your wounds without a stitch

Things would have been easier if Iris were still there, and Kamilla, and Singh. Or so Barry thought, although it wouldn't make the brutal task any easier. Cecile put a hand on Barry's arm and covered her mouth to stop her sobs.

Promises are broken
Tell me are you happy now
Drowning in the hourglass
I guess our time ran out

Barry sped him and Frost to the edge of Central City. The images of Carla, Nash, and Allegra's bloody, limp bodies in his mind. We still have time, he tried to convince himself, they're not dead. They can't be. He won't have anyone else die on his watch.

I hope you're listening

Frost glared at him, but smirked, thinking the hero would sacrifice himself before anyone else died. Caitlin tried begged Frost to not kill Barry, she wouldn't be able to live with herself if she killed the only person who was able to see the good in people, the good in her.

You don't even bother anymore
You cut to the bone
Pick up the phone
To hear my swan song

Barry's hand started vibrating, it would be quick, hopefully painless. He walked towards her, not able to stop the tears anymore. Cisco tried asking him what he was doing over the comms, but Barry ignored him.

You don't even bother anymore
You left me alone
I'm on my own
Tell me where we went wrong

Frost gasped when he plunged his hand through her chest, stopping her heart. The pain was too clear on her face when Barry caught her in his arms as her icy look melted away. Leaving Caitlin.

Abandon the people who shaped who you are
Selfish and thoughtless, you drown in the dark
I hope that you realize the damage you've done
You could not see the light even staring at the sun

"I'm sorry Cait, I wish there had been another way."

Promises are broken
Tell me are you happy now
Drowning in the hourglass
I guess our time ran out
