My mom had saved me from being run over by taking the hit, I was the only kid she had my siblings all were dead or were taken by the tall two legged humans. My mom used her muzzle to throw me to the side as the car raced toward her. Landing painfully I stand and look back at her, she doesn't make a move my eyes widen as her blood starts to flow to the ground. I rush up to her and nudge her with my nose trying to get her back up, I try everything I could but she remains still. My mom was a german shepherd with black fur and bright blue eyes. I smelled humans coming closer so I ran thinking that they would hurt me.
I jolt up in the ally I was sleeping in as the memory replays in my head. That day was two years ago when I was one. Since then I had to learn quick about the ways of the street, when is the time to come out, who would be willing to give you food etc. Walking out of the ally I smell the air for food, finding a trace of meat I follow the trail. Said trail leads me to the nearby park, I see a family having a cookout my mouth starts to water as the scent gets stronger.
Taking a running start I leap just as the male human starts to place the hot dog on a plate. As my feet land I sprint off hearing the male shout at me to get back there. I run quickly enough that to onlookers I look like a shadow with a mind of it own thanks to my fur. Just as I take the corner sharply I run in to a pair of legs, I try to stop but I'm moving to fast. The human falls on me making me fall to the side. Dazed I don't have enough time to run again and the man grabs my scruff harshly pushing me to the ground.
"Hey let her go!" another male human runs up.
"Is she yours?" the man holding me asks his voice is gruff and scratchy.
"Um yeah she escapes every once in a while." the younger sounding one says. I start to struggle in the grip only for him to push harder almost cutting off my breathing.
The second man says something else but I don't catch it being to focused on getting whatever air I can get. Soon I feel something cold wrapping around my neck and tightening I try pulling away but once again it tightens, so I stop. Looking around for an escape a car pulls up and opens , the man hauls me in the car as I growl in protest. Turning my head to bite him I feel something slip over my muzzle. I thrash my head around desperately trying to free myself, but all it does is drain my energy.
Waking up I find myself on the ground surrounded by wood. Standing I wearily walk out of the structure and listen to my surroundings. I hear small whimpers, the wind, and the sound of metal against metal. With the wind comes the smell of blood and human, my ears fall back as the sound of someone in pain reaches my ears. Looking around I see similar wooden structures, and chains that lead into them, the chains are connected to a spike in the ground. That's when the feeling of a heavyweight registers in my mind, looking down I see that I have my own chain that leads to my neck. Using my hind leg I scratch my neck to see what was there my claws hit something I can't identify by sound.
I walk to my spike and try nudging it with my nose to see if it will move, as I thought it didn't. Next I try to bite at it trying to get it to move, yanking it pushing it anything. Nothing works, so I lay down and glare at it.
"Finally you stop." a deep growling voice says. My ears perk up to locate the voice, the source was coming from the house next to mine about fifteen feet away.
"Who are you?" I ask with a small growl.
"The names Frank, and you?" he says stepping out half way allowing me to see that he is a great dane.
"It's (y/n). Where are we?" I ask with a new found respect for the older dog, my ears tilt a little.
"A ring for fighting." he says his voice losing emotion.
