Laying in a hospital bed unable to do anything was all too familiar to Lexie. Two years ago she laid in a hospital just like this one. She had just been saved from the woods. She was depressed and broken. She had lost mark, she suffered many broken ribs and had to have heart surgery.
Now she looks to the side of the bed to see Spencer. Asleep with a case file in his lap. He refused to go work until Lexie was home. Lexie wanted him to go to work, she had Alex, Cristina, and Mer. Caroline went home 2 days after the explosion, she only had a broken leg. Lexie felt bad for keeping Spencer here while his team worked on a case.
Spencer went home for a couple of hours every day so he could shower and consult with the team on video chat. During those hours Lexie's friends would sit with her, Spencer didn't want to seem overly protective of Lexie to her friends, so those few free hours were always a good reset.
Alex, Cristina, and Meredith went back to Seattle yesterday, so now Spencer refuses to leave Lexie's side. Lexie was thankful that he was willing to always sit with her. She liked feeling protected by Spencer, but she felt it was unfair to Spencer, he loved his job he should be out helping them. She could see this case was really bothering him. Something about a serial killer freezing his victims.
When a nurse walked in to switch out Lexie's meds, Spencer shot up awake. He always made sure the nurse gave her the right amount of medicine at the right time.
"Spence, I'm fine, I get out of the hospital tomorrow. You should go back to work."
Spencer leaned over and grabbed her hand. "I'm not going anywhere until you are completely settled at home."
........
Weeks pass and the snow all slowly melts away. The weather gets slightly warmer. Lexie's hard blue cast on her wrist is exchanged for a soft brace. The stitches on her stomach and arm dissolve. She and Spencer go back to work. Caroline hobbles about on a boot-cast. Everything felt good again, routines started to fall back into place.
Coming back to the hospital was an easier adjustment then Lexie thought it would be. The ER was still under construction, but the other hallways of the building felt normal, like home. She couldn't operate still, but she observed lots of surgeries and taught intern classes. She didn't fell the aching feeling she felt years ago, she felt better in the hospital. Saving lives always seemed to make Lexie happy.
However, going through a traumatizing event after healing a different event is bound to open old wounds. The first few nights were the worst, the nightmares just got worse. Spencer eventually pushed Lexie to go to a therapist. She'd visited a therapist in the past but stopped when she moved to Virginia. Therapy really helped in the past, so she wasn't against going back.
Spencer and she had a routine down pat. Lexie had therapy on Wednesday and Saturday evenings so, when Spencer didn't have a case, the two would bring takeout to Lexie's apartment and have dinner there with Caroline. Every other night was usually spent at Spencer's apartment. It was a Saturday night, so the trio was sitting around the tv watching the third Star Wars.
"Well, I have an early morning appointment tomorrow, so I'm going to hit the hay," Caroline said standing and stretching from the couch.
"Night C," Lexie called from her place on the couch, leaning on Spencer. She stifled a yawn as she forced her eyes to stay focused on the screen.
"Hey." Spencer shook her slightly to keep her awake. "Before you go to sleep I have to ask you something."
Lexie sat up so she was facing him, pausing the TV.
"What's up?"
"Well, I was hoping you would join me at my team's dinner tomorrow at Rossi's. The team really wants to meet you." Spencer smiled
