Humans invade by not one but nine alien species working as a coalition. They organize humanity into more efficient roles by indicating who works what jobs, punishing for trouble causing and rewarding obedience.

Aliens are "ranked" themselves, with each species performing specific roles. The first species humans meet that is responsible for initiating contact and assimilating humans are a floating bat/cat spirit like creatures that are very fluffy and cute.  Tend to be very "understanding" and fair. Generally the species most humans like the most.

Other species include an AI responsible for directing war activities (mostly against resistance forces of those species they've taken over).

There's also an alien species responsible for on-the-ground organization and day to day management of the humans. This is the species humans interact with the most and are most familiar with. This species is predominantly the ones that make role assignment decisions, assign training regiments and dictate work loads, rewards and punishments for individual humans.

Main character is a touch esper (goes uncategorized for a while with no one knowing she's and esper). Prine to questioning her orders. Not deliberately rebellious, just a natural deep thinker that can't help but question everything. Gets punished for it by being assigned to one of the most unpleasant roles, corpse shop. Acts a lot like a carpentry workshop except instead of building stuff, they're responsible for dealing with the dead bodies, dissecting to diagnose cause of death, dismembering and processing the different part into what can e reused for other things and whatnot.

The corpse shop is like the place where trouble makers naturally accumulate because they all eventually get sent there as punishment.

She hates it there, her abilities make her naturally more empathetic to others. Meets another esper (Several actually). Her curiosity slowly blooms into actual rebellion against the alien supervisors.
