A Series of Unfortunate Events

Dex was not having a good day.

It had started off awesome, seeing Stina's stupid face mask bottle on the window sill.

Plopping a few drops of permanent dye in it was almost too easy, and her green face was totally worth it.

But Dad was not happy. Not one bit.

He'd put Dex on babysitting duty for what felt like the billionth time, when he could have definitely just sent them to Aunt Eda's.

But noooo. He had to reflect on what he had done, and apparently the best way to do that was handling the three chaotic idiots he called siblings.

He didn't see the point really, why Dad was so scared of the Hekses.

But it was what it was, and he had to be careful.

Nobody liked the Hekses much, his family didn't like them at all, but still they were pretty influential, and getting on their bad side was not doing him any favours.

So he had to suck it up and fake a smile whenever he saw them.

But anyway, it was the holidays, and the Hekses were going far far away to some pretentious Carribean resort Stina had been bragging about forever, so finally he would get some peace.

Besides, there were better things to do than worry about Stina, and even with Sophie helping with the store, it was not going to be easy.

There were the nightshade berries Dad insisted they had to juice on that ancient wooden juicer with the hand crank, and they weren't going to juice themselves.

He sighed and ran a hand through his strawberry blonde hair, making it stand on end, and shuffled over to the register.

He turned with his hand still in his hair, and accidentally elbowed someone coming up from behind him.

The person gave a small squeak, and Dex quickly put his hands in his pocket, looking sheepish.

"Oh..uhh hi Dex", said the person.

Biana.

She was one of Sophie's two best friends, and she was the perfect example of that ideal, unattainable, but still fantasy-worthy crush.

She was almost unfairly beautiful, like it shouldn't have been allowed for a person to be as gorgeous as her.

But there she was.

With her impossibly bright teal eyes, long, wavy chocolate brown hair hanging in soft curls around her shoulders, and a dolphin pendant glittering on her neck.

"Sorry", Dex managed, quickly ducking out of the way.

He had long ago gotten over the fact that she would never like him that way, but he preferred not to spend too much time with her, in case those feelings resurfaced.

So their relationship just consisted of the occasional curt reply, and he preferred it that way.

Spending more time with Biana Vacker was dangerous.

"Hey!", she said, putting a hand on his shoulder. "Wait!"

He turned. "What?"

Don't think about her hand on your shoulder. Don't think about how close you are. Don't do anything stupid.

What was he thinking? It was not a moment, it would never be a moment, she was probably going to ask him something about Sophie.

"What are you thinking about?", she asked. "You look a bit queasy."

He entered the real world with a crash, a place where Biana Vacker and Dexter Dizznee barely talked to each other.

"Nothing.", he said quickly. "I'm fine"

"Anyway-", she began.

Anyway. She could have at least said, 'Are you sure you're fine?', or 'Yeah, take care though', or something, anything  to show she actually cared about him even a little bit.

But she didn't care, she would never care, and however he tried to shield himself from it, even stupid, tiny things like that hurt.

He was careful not to show it this time, though.

"I was wondering...", she trailed off.

She was blushing. Why was she smiling like that? She wasn't looking at him, her eyes were focused on the shelf beside her, but she was definitely blushing.

It had nothing to do with him.

"Do you know that boy who works at the Froyo place next door? With the-"

"Silver tipped bangs?"

"Yeah"

Way to stomp all over my stupid heart, Vacker.

"What about him?", he asked as casually as he could manage.

Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.

Why had he even dared to hope?

Never again.

"Oh! Uh...you know..", she said dreamily, twirling a lock of her hair around her finger. "Does he have a girlfriend?"

"No", he said shortly.

Thankfully, she saw Sophie over his shoulder, and she called her name and waved her over.

He took it as his cue to leave. He need some time without lovesick Miss Sparkles, because it wasn't him she was pining about.

He would get over her. Someday. One day.
