My name is Lee Sohee and this is not my story, but I will explain how I got here.
I had just gotten out of my last class of the day, panicked as the professor had reminded us of the impending deadline of our final project, the last story I would report during my college career, and I had absolutely nothing.
I was on the phone with my friend explaining how all of the people I had tried to get a hold of for an interview had turned me down, explaining that a college students project wasn't how they needed their story explained. As I walked down the aisle of the market a woman stopped me, saying she had overheard my conversation.
She handed me a slip of paper, an address scribbled on it and told me that she had a story to tell that could possibly interest me. I stared in shock as she walked away, disappearing around the corner. I stared down at the slip of paper, an address in Wangshimni stared back at me.
And that's how I got here, sitting in a living room on a plush velvet chair. The woman across from me on a floral couch, sipping tea quietly. Her age only showing in the wrinkles around her eyes and the fragility of her hands. She wears a cream sweater with dark jeans, her hair is pulled back into a bun.
Had someone told me that I would be approached by Lim Y/N in a market I would have laughed in their face. Now I sit across from the widow of the infamous Lim Jaebum, one of the most notorious mob bosses in all of South Korea.
I have to admit, I'm terribly nervous. A mob wife of this caliber is awfully intimidating despite her gentle demeanor, and considering my fascination with the mob from my younger years how could I possibly decline this invitation of a woman so well known in the criminal underworld.
She sets her tea down and crosses her legs. Her eyes crinkle as she gives me a small smile. "Now, where would you like to start?"
"From the very beginning ma'am. I'd like to know everything."
