[The next morning, Newspaper Row, just before the pupsies collect their papers. Jack is late, but the pups seem to be having a fine time without him. Mike and Ike are play fighting with each other. Romeo looking in the trash. Just another normal day for the pupsies.]
RACE (Yawning, with his trusty stick in his mouth)
Them loud human noises kept me awake all night.
MUSH
Human noises is like lullabies to me. The louder they are, the better the headline. The better the headline, the better I eat. And the better I eat-
RACE (Play biting at Mush)
The further away from you I sleep!
DAVID (Running up to everyone panting, his fur a mess)
Morning, everybody. Sorry we're late. We had to help our mom with something.
RACE
Oh. They got a mother? I was gonna get me one.
ROMEO (Tilting his head)
What'd you do with the one you had?
BUTTONS (Walking up to everyone)
He traded her for a bundle of sticks.
RACE [Almost stabbing Buttons with his stick]
Hey, they's was cherrybark!
LES
We have a father, too.
BUTTONS
A mother and a father!
RACE
Hey, ain't we the common mammals?
LES
So how's it goin' today?
ROMEO (Licking dirt off his fur)
Ask me after they put up the headline.
LES (Pointing to the human writing excitedly)
Here it comes now!
[The human puts up the headline, the pupsies gather together]
ALBERT (Squinting; barely being able to read it)
"New Pupsie Price, 60 Treats Per Hundred."
MUSH (Walking through the crowd closer to Albert)
What'd you say?
DAVID (Confused)
Is that news?
FINCH (Dropping his stuffed animal. Enraged)
It is to me!
ALBERT (Angry)
They jacked up the price of papes. Ten treats more a hundred!
FINCH (Stepping on his stuffed animal)
I could eat a few meals on a bacon strip!
STUMPY
I'll be sleeping on the street!
JOJO (Looking at Stumpy confused)
You already sleep on the street.
STUMPY
In the worse box.
JACK (Walking to the pupsies as if he wasn't really late)
