Reader's POV

This was getting a little ridiculous. The campers had failed every single Flower Scout event and I had a strong feeling we weren't going to do so hot in the Wood Scout events either.
David suggested I brought out some snacks for the kids to help get raise their spirits, but I told him maybe we should save those for afterwards in case we do end up losing everything.
Gwen and I stood awkwardly as David tried to motivate the kids, saying something about working together and trusting each other. None of what he was saying seemed to apeal to the kids at all.
I sighed and turned to Gwen, "Have you given any thought on what we'll do for our events?"
She shook her head. "I'm too stressed out about the Wood Scout events to think of anything else..."
I offered her a sympathetic look.
"I say we just throw out our campers with the most obscure talents and hope for the best."
While we were losing our shits over this competition, Campbell oddly seemed to be enjoying himself.
The first Wood Scout challenge was to row out to spooky island and back. Shouldn't be too hard. I did that once myself when I was a camper.
"Uhm... do we have anyone here from rowing camp?" David nervously asked the kids.
Nikki eagerly jumped forward, "I can do it! Lemme get at them boats!"
For her team, she chose Neil and Max, who were noticeably less excited as she was. In hindsight this was an awful selection because A, Neil had arms as thin as a dehydrated noodle, and B, we all knew Max wasn't going to do squat.
As the other teams took off with ease, I stood on the dock with the other adults and watched as the trio struggled. Max glanced at me with his signature 'tired of this shit' expression, which made me have to hold in a laugh.
Noticing this, Max fought to suppress a smile of his own from accidentally slipping.
__________

In short, the campers didn't do well in any of the Wood Scout events.
"SON OF A BITCH!" Gwen exclaimed.
She, David, and I stood together helplessly as we looked over our current score.
"Uh, nothing to worry about! We just- y'know? Gotta believe in ourselves!"
      "Nope, we're boned."
"Fear not, sweet Gwendolyn~ Once you work for the Wood Scouts the only man you'll have to deal with in your life is me," Pikeman said before creepily snaking his arm around Gwen's waist.
    I gagged.
"OH JESUS CHRIST," Gwen yanked my arm and ran towards the kids, "CAMPERS, WE ARE WINNING THAT FUCKING TROPHY!"
"How the hell do we do that?" Neil said, sitting up.
"By overcoming our differences and working togeth-"
"NO" Gwen slapped her hand over David's mouth, "Shut up, you are not going to work together."
      "We're not?"
"No, you're all terrible at it. We're going with (Y/n)'s idea. We've got something they don't."
       "Sub-par indoor plumbing?" Arid asked.
"We've got the most bizarre collection of campers with niche talents and ridiculously specific skill sets Lake Lilac has ever seen! ...and sub-par indoor plumbing." Gwen finished.
      The kids all cheered.
"(Y/n)," Gwen turned to me and pushed me forward.
"Alright kiddos," I began, "so we've got five events, right? I say we send out specifically what we know the other two camps won't be able to do."
The kids huddled together before turning back to me with determined smiles. They had decided that Neil, Harrison, Arid, Nerris, and Nikki would be the ones to participate while the others ran off to help set the events up.
"But, (Y/n) isn't this all-" David stuttered.
"Shhh, Davey just watch." I cut him off with a smirk.
_________
The plan was an absolute success. I was worried that it wouldn't work, but surprisingly the kids managed to pull through. To celebrate, I opted to pick up a few pre-made pizzas for dinner while the kids had the rest of the day to do as they pleased.
David sat in the passenger seat of my car grumbling to himself and playing with one of the bandages around his wounds he'd recieved from Nikki's wolf friend. He had made it his goal to get the kids to work together with his "words of motivation." I could tell he was bitter about the campers ultimately not listening to anything he had said.
"What's wrong, Davey?" As cute as he was when he pouted, I knew that this was going to get old quick unless I let him rant.
"All I wanted was to get the kids to work together!" He said, crossing his arms.
I smiled, "But Davey, they did work together."
"No they didn't! Didn't you hear what they said afterwards?! 'Don't ever work together'" David quoted as he attempted to mimic Nikki's voice.
"Welp, Davey I think you just need to try to look at things from a different angle."
He cocked an eyebrow at me and rolled his eyes.
"Fine then, (Y/n). How would you turn today into a valuable life lesson?!"
I thought for a moment, "Oh I know! Today our campers came together and acknowledged how special and different each one of them are, and worked together to put together a unique set of events that would help us win! I'm not sure how to summarize that."
David sat up in his seat and slowly smiled.
      "That was... actually really good."
I laughed, "Even if the kids don't realize it, they did work together today."
David seemed satisfied for the moment, but for the rest of the ride I could tell he was deep in thought. I, however, chose not to bug him about it.
