AN: To avoid confusion, this is a flashback! :)

3rd POV

"I've got the sleeping bags!" Ten year-old David said as he threw said sleeping bags onto the ground and dived into the couch. He sat up excitedly and turned to a little girl, who smiled at him from her spot on the carpet. She was sitting on front of a couple of bowls filled with chips and dip, enjoying herself.
"Are you sure you two will be alright sleeping in the living room? Want any extra blankets?" David's mother pestered as she pinned her hair up in a neat bun.
"We're good, thanks mom." David dismissed in an annoyed tone.
"Alright then, I'll be upstairs if- oh! (Y/n), honey, let me tie up your hair for you."
David's mother slid another hair tie off of her wrist and kneeled down behind (Y/n). The girl in question visibly tensed at the feeling of David's mother's dainty hands wrapping around her (long/short) hair.
"Aaaaand... all done!" David's mother cheered.
(Y/n) mumbled a meek 'thank you' before resuming eating. David's mother made her way over to David and gave him a quick peck on the cheek before heading upstairs. David wiped his cheek off in disgust and climbed off of the couch.
"What movie should we watch, Davey?"
David thought for a moment then shrugged. "You pick, you're my guest."
The two argued back and forth between who should pick the movie before ultimately deciding to just randomly select one from the shelves. A few mintues passed and the two children sat in comfortable silence sharing chips until David noticed that (Y/n) wasn't paying much attention to the movie.
She swirled his chip repeatedly in a bowl of salsa with an irked expression plastered on his face.
"...what is it, (Y/n)?" David asked.
(Y/n) tensed and glanced up at the the TV, then to David.
"Ah, sorry. Nothing really. Don't worry 'bout me."
David pushed the bowl in front of her aside and scooted closer to (Y/n), who gave him a confused look. David motioned for her to talk with his hand. (Y/n) rolled her eyes and sighed.
"It's just... Damn. I wish your mom was my mom." (Y/n) confessed.
David scrunched up his nose. "No you don't. All she does is scold me for everything."
"Well... I'd rather have that over a mom who can't even remember my middle name."
"Don't say that. Having parents who leave you alone is way better than one who always nags."
(Y/n) sighed, "At the very least you know she cares."
The pair was silent for a moment before David spoke up.
"Are you going to that... summer camp again this year?"
(Y/n) let out an angry sigh, "I hate that damn place."
David got up and tossed (Y/n) a pillow. "What about that friend you had- what was his name? Jason?"
   "Jasper." (Y/n) corrected.
   "Whatever."
"He's cool, but he's kind of a goodie-two-shoes haha." (Y/n) chuckled, "I think you two would actually get along well."
"HEY what's that supposed to mean!?" David said, nudging (Y/n) defensively.
"It means you're a big nerd, Davey."
David wacked (Y/n) upside the head with his pillow. "You take that back!"
(Y/n) moved the bowls out of the way and stood up with a determined smile.
"Just accept that you're super lame!" (Y/n) laughed as she smacked David square in the face with her pillow.
"Not as lame as you!" David lunged at (Y/n) and tackled her into the couch.
The two let out a soft "oof" at the impact and sat up giggling uncontrollably. David rubbed the back of his head and sighed.
"I'm going to miss you when you leave for camp." David whined, "What the heck will I do while you're gone?"
"What do you normally do when I'm gone?"
      "...Nevermind."
(Y/n) laughed draped one of the sleeping bags over her and David as if it were a blanket.
"If you really don't like your parents, you and (S/n) can always live here with me." David proposed.
"We basically do. It's not like we come over here every day."
"Well...uhm... OH! You can just marry me and then we'd have to officially live together." David smiled triumphantly.
"Why can't your mom just adopt (S/n) and I?"
David rolled his eyes, "But then our marriage would be incest or something."
"Do you even know what that means?"
David looked away in embarrassment. He did not know the actual definition, it was just something he heard for the older kids at school.
(Y/n) laughed again, which was music to David's ears.
"What do you think we'll be like as adults?" David attempted to change the subject.
"Probably not much different than we are now." (Y/n) shrugged, "I like how we are now."
"...Do you think we'll be anything like our parents?" David asked hesitantly.
David's mom was an excellent parent. His father, however, was a different story. Whenever David's father was brought up he would quickly dismiss it and change the subject.
"Of course not. I know I won't be anything like my parents. Breaking the cycle and all that crap." (Y/n) answered.
(Y/n) snuggled closer to David and wrapped her arms around the pillow beside her.
"We're gonna be better than them. I can tell."
David was satisfied, and quickly jumped up to retrieve the bowls of chips before resuming his spot next to (Y/n).
"I think so too." He smiled.
