Luca stepped into the penthouse just after sunset.
The air was still. Too still.
No scent of coffee. No Kaia curled up on the couch with a laptop. No footsteps, no sound of her rummaging through drawers, looking for something she couldn't see.
His jaw ticked.
He walked room to room — methodical, calm on the outside — checking every space like he already knew she wouldn't be there.
She wasn't.
Not in the kitchen. Not in the study. Not in the bedroom where her perfume still clung to the sheets.
Not in the bathroom Her phone was gone. Her gun was gone. Her coat was missing from its hook by the door.
He tried calling.
Straight to voicemail.
Luca didn't move for a long moment. Just stared at the silent screen, his mind beginning to shift gears — from confusion to concern to calculation.
Then he called Blade.
Then Starr. Then Ida.
Then Oscar, who was with Thea.
No one knew where she was. No one had seen her leave.
And that was when the silence cracked.
He didn't yell. Didn't throw anything.
But his fist clenched so tight the veins in his arm bulged like cables. His breathing slowed, sharpened. Something cold and old started to rise in his chest — a weight he hadn't felt in years.
Because she was gone.
And no one knew where.
And all he could picture was her — bleeding again. Broken. Alone. Without him.
Then Blade called back.
"She's in Jersey," he said. Hesitant. "One of our guys at the bridge saw her pass through the checkpoint."
