5 years ago:

She woke to the sound of waves.

Not crashing, not roaring — just the distant hush of them, like the sea was breathing through her.

Her eyelids were heavy, skin stiff with salt and something sterile. An IV prickled in the crook of her arm. Her mouth was dry, lips cracked. For a moment, she thought she might be dead. She hoped she was.

Then came the voice. Deep. Warm. Male.

"There she is."

A shape hovered above her — all white hair and sun-wrinkled skin, eyes as blue as the Mediterranean sky. He looked like a fisherman carved from kindness, but there was steel in his spine. A former soldier, maybe. A captain, once. He had that aura.

"You're safe now," he said gently. "You washed up half-alive on our coast. The cruise line reported you missing. Took days."

Her throat worked. No sound came out.

"Don't speak yet. You've had seawater in your lungs. But you made it. And that's something."

She blinked at him, slow. Confused. Still not sure if she was dreaming.

Then—another voice. Raspy. Feminine. Magnetic. Like silk wrapped in steel wire.

"Faffa."

The old man stepped aside.

And there she stood.

A young woman. No older than Katrina herself — maybe a year younger. Pale skin. Loose obsidian curls tumbling down her back. Golden eyes that flickered like candlelight, trained sharply on her, scanning with surgical precision.

She didn't smile. But she didn't look away either.

"She's lucid," the girl said, voice like water over stone. "Vitals are stabilizing."

"Of course she's stabilizing," Adrian said proudly. "She's a fighter."

The girl stepped forward. Her presence was unsettlingly calm. Protective, but distant. Controlled.

"You're in Greece," she said. "The island of Nisyros. A hospital not far from the harbor."

Katrina's eyes widened. "I... I fell."

"Yes," the girl said, folding her arms. "And you survived."

Adrian touched her shoulder. "This is my granddaughter," he said. "Kaia."
