You walked into class with a coffee holder in hand for Mya, Eric, and yourself. You walked slowly making sure not to spill it as you set it on the table.
"Coffee?" Eric asked.
"Yeah, I was just going to buy one for Mya and myself but I decided why not buy you something as well." Mya looked up at your face confused. "What?" You half-laughed half asked. "I wanted to try and be nice for once."
"What type did you get me?" Eric asked you, grabbing the wrong coffee from the holder without knowing. You quickly grabbed his hand and pushed the coffee back in. You had done it so naturally you barely even noticed the look Mya was giving you.
"Oh-" You began but she reached over and grabbed the coffee you and Eric had been holding hands-on and placed it next to her. "I got you," you dragged out u while you handed Eric the coffee with "vanilla" written on the side. "A hot vanilla latte."
"How'd you know I liked it?" He had a confused look on his face.
"You brought it into photography class once." He stared at you and you looked at him. "I have a good memory." You shrugged and sat down, grabbing your drink. As you began drinking the coffee Mr. Gray began talking.
"I'll be assigning partners for our next project, which I'll be handing papers out for." He handed a stack of papers to the front row and encouraged them to pass it back. "This project requires you to find a controversial subject based around children and compare each side of the argument and if it could lead to future trauma within a child's life." You looked at Mya excited for a group project you two could do together. "I'll be grouping you all by who you're sitting by," he began pairing up the class and finally arrived at your table. "Y/N and Eric." He resumed his normal pace and paired Mya with the girl sitting behind her.
You and Mya stared at each other until turning to Eric. He looked up at the two of you and shrugged.
"Any ideas Y/N?" You let out a large sigh and laid your head against the table.
"Really?" You called out, Mr. Gray looked back at you.
"Everything is final Y/N." He walked back to his desk and you turned to Eric. "So how are we going to do this?" You asked.
"What do you mean?"
"Like who's house, who'll do the research, who will do most of the-" Eric quickly cut you off.
"We're both doing equal work." He said snappily.
"Wow, okay didn't know it was such a big deal for you. I just thought that since photography-"
"I didn't want to do that class so of course, I didn't want to do the work." His voice had gotten louder and his face had gotten closer to yours.
"Oh." You said quietly, you were almost offended by what he had said. Maybe he didn't want to be in that class because you were in it, you thought. You had hoped he would apologize for his anger and words but you both stayed silent. You turned back to Mya and expected her to be next to you but she and her new partner had moved across the room without you noticing.
You turned back to Eric now ashamed and blood running to your face. "Umm," You mumbled quietly. "We could do our project on verbal abuse versus physical." You suggested, you stared at his feet too ashamed to look at him.
"Yeah sounds like a good idea." He said flatly. You could see Eric shift his feet back to the front of his desk, you lifted your head and faced the front of your desk as well.
You and Eric worked for the rest of the class period studying over articles you found online in silence only hearing the clicking of the keyboard and the other hum of classmates' conversations.
"I want this project done by Tuesday." Mr. Gray said the bell rang a few seconds after he finished.
"Shit, I guess we'll have to work over the weekend." You said.
"Yeah, I guess."
"Are you okay? Did I say something rude? I swear I didn't mean to." You said fumbling over your words, your face growing red again.
"No. Wait no, I'm fine but you didn't say anything wrong." As he talked you could see slight color on his face as well. You felt a little less stupid now and a small smile began to tug at the corners of your mouth.
"What's your favorite type of cookie." You asked, he looked up from his backpack and met your eyes.
"What?"
"You heard me."
"Y/N why?"
"I just like knowing." You said and gave him a puppy dog face.
"I don't know, peanut butter I guess?" He said, his face had grown confused and twisted trying to read your face.
"Thanks!" You said skipping over to Mya. "I'll meet you tomorrow at your house, at 10 am sharp." Before you turned your head to look at Mya you were able to see a small smile spread across Eric's face.
"What was that about?" Mya said, breaking your thoughts of Eric.
"What do you mean?"
"The coffee and now cookies?" She said you could hear something in your voice that you couldn't quite recognize but knew it wasn't good.
"Mya, it's not like that. HE'S YOUR BROTHER." A few people turned to look at you while you and Mya began walking down the hallway. "I'm just trying to be a better person."
"By flirting with my BROTHER!" Mya stopped in the hallway facing you.
"I swear Mya it's not like that."
"Sorry Y/N I don't know what I'm talking about, sorry for snapping at you." Mya rubbed her hands across her face in a dragging motion and then began walking again.
"No, don't worry about it. Sorry if I'm freaking you out about it though I don't mean to come across as so flirty."
"So you admit it!" Mya said laughing. "You are flirting."
"Mya you know what I mean!" You pushed her as you two were walking and continued laughing down the hall.
