Anne's POV:
Two bowls of soup sat on his nightstand , untouched and cold. It was close to midnight and Marilla had left hours ago, I was tired but I couldn't leave his side, he looked so pale and sickly, just as..Mathew had. The Charlottetown doctor came just a while before Marilla departed. Though I wished she left a moment before because an awful conversation struck up between me and him. It went like this:
"Excuse me miss" the doctor said politely waiting for me to move from Gilbert's side. I quickly obliged picking up my chair and carrying it to the front of the room where Bash and Marilla were standing. Hazel and Delly were in the other room. "I know you must be worried about your beau but I can assure you he will be fine." he said, obviously directed towards me, "after hmm..we will say a week's rest, probably not bed rest the entire time but no hard labor or being out on the farm please"I almost passed out myself, but instead I sat there like a dunce with my mouth open. His eyes then panned back over to me. "Miss are you alright?"
"I-I um well aha uh.." I, Anne Shirley-Cuthbert was at a loss for words. This NEVER happens!!
Bash quite suddenly busted out laughing, "They...hahah" deep breath "aren't hahaha courting" he said barely being able to breathe between fits of laughter. "Oh silly me, I just assumed so from the way you acted around him. I also thought you made that for him." He stated pointing to my flower crown that was in Gil's hand. He scooted out of the room to talk to Hazel. I felt as red as my hair as I pushed my chair back over to Gilbert's sleeping body. Shooting glares at the door like the doctor was still standing there.
Mathew and Mary would have gotten a good laugh out of that one.
Gilbert's POV:
I wake up to see a young redhead sleeping on my chest cross armed and resting her her head inside them, her eyes gently closed, a flower crown laying like a halo around her face. How had I gotten back home? Bash probably came to get me and Anne tended to me. I focused back on her. She looked so peaceful, I hadn't seen her peaceful in so long. She had a tiny smile spread across her lips but her eyes soon fluttered open and so I quickly closed mine.
She lifted her head off my chest and felt my forehead, which she must have decided was too hot for her liking since she dabbed a towel on it. She then carefully placed a hand on my shoulder, and whispered "Gil? Are you awake?" her touch made a weird feeling in my stomach, like a songbird flapping around, it made me happy and excited, it made me open my eyes quickly to the girl's voice.
She leaned above me, and a surprised look danced upon her features when I opened my eyes but she soon composed herself and shot a sarcastic comment my way "Hope you had a good nap Sleeping Beauty!" My voice was raspy but I managed a laugh. She walked to the other side of my bed to look at my forearm. About 10 straight stitches ran across my skin and I felt my eyes go wide. "Where did I-?" I started to ask but Anne quickly cut me off, telling me not to waste my strength on talking. "The boys did a number on you, I had to stitch you up with my own thread, I'm sorry." She muttered running her fingers over the stitches and asking if that hurt. I promptly told her no. She took the flower crown off her head and placed it on the nightstand next to me. "Carrots" I muttered almost silently as I wistfully admired the crown of flowers that sat atop my nightstand. She glanced at me like I had grown another head and said "hm?"
"Carrots..." I said again a bit louder, not even realizing the trouble I may or may not have put myself in.
She immediately whipped around to face me, mock anger on her image "well then Slate Face is that how you wanna do it?" she exclaimed, but I could tell she was trying to suppress a smile.
"Ho ho ho..! Slate Face!
"Well, well Gil, I may have to run for my money in the nicknaming department. Who knows!" She joked
"When have I never put up a fight against you Anne-girl? Besides academically of course." She just laughed shaking her head when Hazel walked in "Mr Blythe you're up!" she exclaimed. "Let me grab Sebastian! Oh and Miss Anne, your mothe' wants you home she must think you've caught your death by now." I watched Anne swell with happiness as Hazel referred to Marilla as Anne's mother. She just nodded and left the room after gathering her things.
Just before she exited she looked me straight in the eye and said "I knew you where awake." And quickly dashed through the house.
Anne:
~Friday, 4 days later~
It was a beautiful late spring morning as I rose for school. I quickly styled my hair in my signature double braids. Then I put on my dress and pinafore and grabbed my belongings quickly saying goodbye to Marilla and eating breakfast on my way out the door.
I finished my food just as I reached my dearest Diana. We hugged and linked arms with each other before making our way to school. Diana was still prying me for details on Gilbert's health even though I told her everything I could (minus the nicknaming) since I only saw him that night, Bash and Hazel insisting they could take care of Gil and Delphine by themselves. I didn't push anything on them and left well enough alone. Though I still wore the flower crown as we trudged through the schoolhouse door.
Gilbert:
Peers crowded me asking if I was alright, I assured them again and again I was fine, I didn't really like when the crowded me, most of the time I couldn't get a word out and so I just sat and listened to their non-coherent squawking. Just then a shriek tore through the crowd and a very angry Shirley-Cuthbert came storming towards me, the kids parted like the Red Sea to make a path for her. It made me reminisce about "The Great Notice Board Incident of '98" suddenly she half screamed "Gilbert Blythe"
