Chapter 3

"What was that?" I shouted in shock.

"It's the Shellfire!" Astrid and Heather shouted in unison. What on earth was a shellfire?

"The what?"

"It's a dragon, we thought it was long gone, but it looks like the Hunters have managed to catch it again. We should get back to base immediately!" Astrid replied, turning and fleeing away from the source of the attack. "Someone get Viggo from his cell, then take him to our arena."

"I'm on it!" I replied, dashing to where Viggo was being held. As I neared the stables, I questioned my choice to be Viggo's rescuer. Earlier I had wanted to be as far from him as possible. Oh dear, this day seemed to be getting worse and worse.

Viggo stood as I nearly crashed trying to land inside the stables. I felt the whole island shake as another fireball made contact with the Edge.

"What in the name of Thor is going on?!" He asks as I near him.

"Shellfire, I'm taking you to the arena, everyone's meeting there. And no, I do not trust you riding on my back, so I'm carrying you. Come on." I unlocked the cage and let Viggo step out before picking him up and gliding over to the arena, everyone else was already waiting.

Hiccup approached me as I landed and set Viggo down. "Oh, thank Thor you're alright. We're making a plan. I know you've never encountered a Shellfire before, so listen hard, because all of us have."

I nod, making sure I could keep an eye on Viggo so he couldn't escape while we talked. More loud explosions shook the Edge as we spoke. I became increasingly worried as the Riders argued about the outcomes of their last encounter with the Shellfire.

Then, it was as if a lightbulb went off in my head. I could try to speak to the Shellfire as a Seawing! It would certainly understand my Aquatic, I've never met a dragon here who couldn't! I interrupted the others' yelling immediately.

"Guys!" I yelled over their voices, Viggo glanced at me in surprise. "Listen, I am a shapeshifter. And there are a certain species of dragon called SeaWings that can breathe underwater. I could change into my Seawing form and dive down to communicate with the Shellfire. You all could distract the hunters!"

Hiccup's face lit up at the idea. "She's right, all of our dragons know Aquatic, because their tribe taught them the language when they were here years ago. Not a dragon on land or sea doesn't know it!"

Heather looked confused. "What's Aquatic?"

I responded excitedly. "It's a language that the Seawings created to communicate underwater. Here. Watch me."

I transformed into a Seawing and flashed my scales, saying 'hello' in Aquatic. Heather caught on quickly and turned to Astrid. Viggo, now in the back of our circle, watched me as I demonstrated a second time, then transformed back into a NightWing.

Fishlegs came closer to me and began to speak. "Are you sure you want to do this? I mean, I know that the Shellfire is being controlled and forced into attacking places, but it might still be hostile with random dragons like you."

"I'm sure. And besides, if things went wrong I could use my awesome power to steer it away from the Edge." I added that last part with a laugh. Fishlegs seemed convinced and Hiccup called for everyone's attention.

"Okay gang, here's the plan." He continued. "While Stardust swims under the cover of the ocean to talk to the Shellfire, Astrid, you, me, the Twins, Fishlegs, and Heather, will go to distract the Hunters. Snotlout, you're on guard duty, keep a close eye on Viggo and do not let him out. You stay here. Understand?"

Snotlout nods with a nervous glance towards Viggo, who smiled in return.

I transformed back into the form of a SeaWing and sneaked out of the arena with the others, the sun was starting to set. Snotlout remained behind. Though as we neared the beach, I separated from the Riders and dove into the sea, wishing them luck.
