HAVING AN OLDER BROTHER WASN'T ALWAYS SO BAD. If there was someone bothering Alissa or Brian, Carter was ready to fight and defend his siblings, not liking the fact that someone was trying to hurt them. On their birthdays, he tended to go a little over the top, trying to one over even their friends by getting his brother and sister the best present and boasting about it for the rest of the party. If he was mad at one of his siblings but they were hurt, he would check on them, not letting whatever happened between them get in the way of him making sure they were okay. And it always made Brian and Alissa feel lucky to have Carter as their older brother. Except, the minute Alissa returned home, Carter was right at her side, inspecting the dazed smile he saw upon his sisters face, already knowing what that smile meant; it was the same smile he'd seen on Liz's face when he asked her to be his girlfriend.
Alissa gave Carter an odd look, hanging her coat on the rack beside the door, shaking snow from her hair while tugging off her shoes. "What? Are you expecting an early birthday present or something because I can assure you, I don't have it yet," she said placing her gloves on the table, offering a small smile over her shoulder. If there was one thing Alissa liked, it was the fact that her birthday wasn't around Christmas like Carter's was, being just four days after. People tended not to give him as much (Carter always complained, anyways), but over the years, he'd grown used to it, still happy that people cared enough to get him anything at all. "I think Brian's already got yours, though. He's had it for a while actually, I think."
Carter blinked. "That's not why I'm giving you this brotherly look," he said, catching Alissa's eye. She turned on her heels to face him, arms folded over her chest. He rolled his eyes. "Seriously? You don't know why I'm giving you this look?"
Alissa pursed her lips, shaking her head. "I don't know, you're constipated?" Carter scoffed, lightly punching her shoulder. She winced, narrowing her eyes and pushing past him, making sure to bump her shoulder into his as she did so. "Okay, I give up then, shit head, why are you giving me your infamous brotherly look?"
Carter silently trailed after his sister.
Alissa knew why he was giving her the look, but she wasn't going to let him know that. It was barely an hour since she and Peter became official, she didn't want everyone to know already. She wasn't even sure if she wanted people to know the next day, but she didn't think that would work out. She loved her friends too much not to tell them, and she was almost certain Peter felt the same.
"You and Peter," Carter said, "How? No, don't answer that. Better yet, why?"
Alissa opened the fridge, holding out a bag of grapes towards her brother, a sly smile apparent. "Grapes?" She asked, shaking the bag slightly.
Carter groaned and plopped down at the counter, smacking his head against it. Alissa giggled, placing the bag back in the fridge, deciding on just grabbing a water bottle. She walked over to the counter, leaning her elbows against it as Carter lifted his head back up. At the same time, Brian walked in, his hair ruffled and messy. His eyes fell on his siblings, already feeling the slight tension.
