After hearing the sad night Scout had, and the fast paced one that Valentine had, I'm sure you're wondering how exactly things plaid out for Mary that night. The girl had gone absolutely haywire, and could hardly keep her voice beneath an full fledged scream.
Or maybe you're not wondering, but you're going to find out anyways—because that night was a turning point for so many reasons.
"Hey," the blonde sheepishly greeted the boy she'd invited after her mom had chased Scout to god knows where.
"Hi, Mary. You alright?" Chase asked, shifting his weight back and fourth awkwardly as Mary hadn't exactly invited him inside.
"Yeah, can I ask you for a favor?" She asked, shrugging her sleeve back up after it had fallen and exposed her shoulder. She didn't have enough energy to put nice clothes on, and she really just needed to clear her mind.
"Yeah, anything," poor Chase agreed, not really knowing what he was getting himself into at the time.
"My mom and Valentine's dad are fucking, and my life is at a weird place right now. I would like it if we could go upstairs and do things that we never speak about again," Mary confessed, speaking with such intent that Chase didn't quite know how to react. He was just an average twenty year old boy though, and he would never reject a girl like Mary over something so trivial.
And so that's exactly what they did. Marry allowed the man into her room just in hopes of forgetting the troubling life events that she had no idea were soon to get even worse. She bonded with Chase in more ways than one. They actually ended up talking for hours on end even after they finally put their clothes back on.
The two had more in common than Mary had even noticed, and it was so easy to get swept up in her night with him. To her, the world actually felt kind of nice as the two tried to keep their laughter down, not knowing if the adults downstairs were awake or not. Mary didn't even think about the fact that Scout was probably there too, she couldn't think of much other than the way Chase was holding her as they fell asleep together.
It had been unintentional, but there slept third and final couple of the night.
See, all three of them were dealing with the situation in much different ways. Valentine and Luke had somehow gotten themselves into an actual relationship, Scout had finally apologized to his most loved ones, and Mary had opened up to a boy in ways she hadn't done in years, since the last time she had been crushed by a male who just didn't know how to love.
Whether they were using love, sex, or dead relatives as a coping mechanism, they all had someone by their side, committing them to that distraction in the most supportive ways.
They may have been drastically changing, but none of them felt alone that night. For once the townspeople of Elgin all seemed to be in their places, and everything just looked right on paper. No matter the drama—big or small—they had each other until the very end, and that's all that really mattered.
