The widows of the shops lining the street reflect the red and green lights that are strung around abundantly, adding to the picturesque quality of the moonlit scene. A trench coat clad figure stands in the middle of the empty street, fingers entwined with a girl who is shivering, despite being bundled up in a puffy red coat. Behind the couple sits a blue and white police call box, in all of its mysterious, alien glory. The girl sighs contentedly, and leans back comfortably into the man. He wraps his arms around her waist protectively, reveling in their combined warmth, and the movement of her gentle breathing. He smiles down at her, watching her look at the moon peacefully. She is glad for this rare moment of silence. It's late Christmas Eve night, and all the other people of London are in their various homes and apartments, sleeping. Neither the Time Lord nor his companion have purchased gifts for one another, for both agreed that they didn't want anything in particular. The girl breaks the silence. "We have any plans for tomorrow?"
"Nah, I was thinking we could hang around the TARDIS, listen to holiday music, watch cheesy Christmas movies, you know, that sort of a thing. Unless you had something else in mind?" She regards the idea happily.
"No, that sounds perfect." She pulls away from his embrace, and places her chilled hands in his. He finds that his eyes have become captivated by her. They become still, lost in each other's eyes and their own thoughts. Both are possess the strong desire to move closer, erase the gap, but are fearful of what the other's reaction would be. The Doctor finally grins, breaking the rising tension, and pulls her into the TARDIS after him. She disappears into her room, and he goes into the kitchen to make himself a cup of tea. He makes one for Rose as well, and brings it to her door when it's finished brewing, being careful to avoid spilling the steaming amber liquid. Transferring both mugs to one hand, he knocks gently to avoid waking her in case she is asleep. She opens the door quickly, as if she had been standing there already, debating whether to come out or not. She has shed the coat, and now wears a comfortable looking jacket, and jeans.
"I made you some tea, thought you might like something to warm you up?" She smiles, tongue between teeth, and takes the offered mug, shivering with pleasure as the warmth creeps slowly into her frozen fingers.
"Thanks." The Doctor smiles and nods. Rose walks away from the door, leaving it open, and sits on the edge of her bed. The Doctor hesitates a moment at this obvious invitation, but soon walks in and perches beside her, sipping his tea, and enjoying the light strawberry fragrance that permeates the room. The TARDIS really seems to have taken a liking to his companion. The TARDIS hums softly in his head, telling him that she isn't the only one who has taken a liking to Rose Tyler. He chides her mentally, and feels a blush rising to his face. He glances over at Rose, hoping she won't notice. To his surprise, she seems to be blushing as well. He looks away quickly, and wonders what she's thinking about. The TARDIS pointedly suggests that it's him, and he concludes that the blush must be from the heat of the tea.
The tea is finished shortly, but neither the human nor the Time Lord feels inclined to do anything, whether that something be move or speak. The cozy warmth of the room mixed with the comforting feeling of the Doctor beside her soon proves too much for the little earth girl, and she is soon slumped against him, with her mug dangling from a limp hand. The Doctor takes the mug from his drowsy companions grasp, and sets both mugs on the ground while making certain not to wake her. He now debates the options of what to do. Wanting to avoid any and all awkwardness later, he lowers her gently back onto the mattress, and makes sure she is in a comfortable looking position. Pulling the covers over her, he tucks her in gently. She mutters something, and he leans down to hear better. She doesn't repeat whatever she said, and he pulls back. Now, suddenly, he is all too aware that their faces are mere inches apart. Thousands of thoughts whirl through his head, mainly the fact that she isn't going to know that any of this happened in the morning. Overcome by temptation, he leans down quickly, and kisses her softly, knowing full well that should she wake up, this will quite possibly be the most embarrassing and awkward moment of his existence. Thankfully she doesn't stir, and he stands up, making the bed creak quietly. He gathers the two mugs, and walks to the door, taking one last lingering glance at the sleeping form of his companion and fancying he sees a small smile spreading slowly over her face. He turns out the light, and shuts the door softly. Happy Christmas Rose Tyler, and have a fantastic new year.
(One year later)
The Doctor sits alone in the console room of the TARDIS, reminiscing about Christmas Eve past. Thinking about how he would give anything to have her back, anything to go back to that day. He wishes she would've woken now, no matter how awkward it would've been for him, for now, she is gone. Sentences have been left unfinished, and callused hearts torn in two. He truly loved his human, but his cowardice got in the way. All he can do now, is hope that she has forgotten him, and that she's moved on with a life that he can never take part in again. He shivers with chill and misery. The TARDIS lights have taken on a melancholy glow ever since she left, and he knows that moving on, for him is impossible. She has made yet another scar on his hearts. Happy Christmas Rose Tyler, and goodbye.
