Fluffy Hair and Foreshadowing

I rummaged in the closet, looking for something that could do as pajamas. I found a unicorn onesie, which was really unexpected but adorable. Using my twig arms, I managed to maneuver Logan into the onesie, into bed, and pull the blankets over him. Damn, that comforter was soft. So was the mattress and the many pillows on his bed. It was all the kind of soft that only something expensive and really well-made could have. When I stayed at Remy's before I got my own apartment, his couch was as hard as the floor itself. Scratch that, the floor was better because it had the rug. Not that I wasn't grateful or anything, but my back was hurting a lot for that month.

I flopped onto the bed with him, reveling in the fluffy blankets. I wondered if his hair would be the same....against my better judgement, I slowly reached out and touched his hair. And oh god, it was the softest hair I had ever felt. He must've used magic, because there's no way a regular conditioner would do that. "It's so soft I could die." I muttered, grabbing the spellbook and opening it to see if there was some spell that would make my hair as soft as his. I flipped through the pages idly, looking for a beauty spell when another caught my eye. Mainly because the page was glowing a sinister pinkish-red color.

"Hmm...how to give yourself good luck? Interesting." I read the page. The ritual called for some salt, water, a knife that had been anti-blessed?, fives post-it notes, a bucket and paintbrush, any number of goats between 3 and 7, and a ritualistic human sacrifice. I flipped the page and started to read another spell before a thought appeared in my mind and I set down the book. "Wait a minute. Human sacrifices aren't normal, I don't think." It has been scientifically proven that I am as dumb as Karen Smith. I quickly picked up the book and fully read the spell, horrified at what I saw. Okay, some dude was probably going to kill another person, big deal.

Why was the page glowing pink-red then? I suddenly remembered the letter tucked into a page of the book that I hadn't had time to read yet. I took it out, careful not to rip or crumple the old and fragile-looking paper. The letter was in my dad's loopy handwriting and it went like this:

Dear Virgil (you're the only one who goes through my stuff),

I know you're probably confused and overwhelmed right now. I mean, who wouldn't be? You found out you were a witch, met a hot guy who was also a witch (I ship it by the way), met his dad who tried to kill you or something (I'm going to have a talk with Janus when he dies about that), and you read a whole bunch of spells and stuff. I know this because of a future vision spell I used when you were a kid. Now, this book is a very powerful weapon. You have to learn how to use it correctly and never let it fall into the hands of anything evil. There are some things you need to know about this book:

Use every spell with good or noble intentions. Otherwise, the book will reject you and you'll either die or you'll never be able to do magic again. Of course, there are ways of deceiving the book, but those spells take an incredible amount of power and finesse. You just don't have enough experience to do that yet.

Now that I'm dead, you're the owner of the book. As you were the first one to touch it after I died (I made sure of that), you can control it completely. It cannot be destroyed by anyone but you, and no one can open it unless you give consent in your mind. Treat the book like you would treat something valuable, it is actually one of the most valuable items in the supernatural world. My father-your grandfather-was one of the witches on Merlin's Council, and that book includes a lot of his original spells that he made.

You can open the forbidden chapter, as I said, you are the complete owner of the book. However, even though I trust you, I put a magic lock on it. Those spells are incredibly dangerous and risky, I will not have you, an inexperienced witch who completed maybe one spell, trying out a spell that can obliterate an entire city. The lock will vanish when the book feels that you are ready for everything.

If a page or a spell is highlighted, then there are several things that could be happening. If it's highlighted green, that means that someone close to you is using that spell. If it's glowing black, that means a non-witch is using the spell. If the page or spell is glowing a pinkish-red, then someone is targeting the person you love or planning to use them in a ritual. They are in grave danger, and you have to find and stop the person before they complete the spell. You can use the tracking spell on page 45 for that.

Lastly, just know that I love you so, so much. I'm sorry that I had to leave you and die so early, but I already saw myself dying and I accepted it. It would be good for you to accept it too. If you ever miss me, then just remember that I'm always watching over you and I miss you so incredibly much.

Love,

Your father, Patton Sandersshelppsaisaiusajsa

I stared at the end of the letter, more than a bit confused. It seemed like he was going to write something else but was stopped. It was probably because he had something more important to do, I didn't even want to think about the other option. I was really upset for multiple reasons. One, my dad might have died from something...other than natural causes. No matter how much I tried to deny it, it was a viable option. Two, Logan was in danger (I'd be worried for Remy but he can handle himself) and I couldn't help them alone, I was too inexperienced. Which brought me to my third point, I would have to ask Logan's dad for help. Even though he hated me, I was way in over my head and he was a detective and a powerful magic user, both of which would help me immensely. But he was sleeping right now...so I guess there was nothing to do but wait, and maybe take a nap next to Logan. After all, the bed was super comfortable, I was tired, and he was asleep too. I slowly laid down under the blankets with him, wrapping his arms around me so we were spooning.

Patton sighed in relief as Virgil went to sleep. He had been worried that his son would try to do this on his own, and he was happy that he would get help...even if it was from Janus. Who was technically plotting-that's a story for another day.
