Asa barely had time to think. Her wolf hadn't been free in so long, she wasn't sure she would be able to contain her. It was a risk to shift, especially near anyone, but she had to. It had been too long.

Briefly, she'd checked on Luna. Ella waved her on before she could say anything. 'Go before she sees you.' She mouthed as she turned. A spark of gratitude and warmth filled her chest. She would have to remember to thank Ella later.

Asa nodded her thanks and headed back down the stairs. Her thoughts racing as her feet moved beneath her. She went out the back, the way she'd seen Zane go that first day in the house. She walked through the forest in human form for several minutes before she decided to shift.

It had been so long since she'd felt her wolf come to the surface that the transformation actually caused her pain.

Her wolf came to the surface with a howl that shook the trees. Birds who had before been perching peacefully flew off in alarm. Squirrels scurried away and chipmunks ducked for cover.

Asa stood there in wolf form, happiness pouring into every sense of her being. With a happy yip she started running forward, through the underbrush. The cool dirt beneath her paws sent a shiver of excitement down her spine. Her wolf was practically pushing Asa aside, begging to be let free.

She inhaled deeply taking in the aroma of the earth around her. A scent that reminded her of her mate. Not wanting to ruin this moment here and now, she pulled back and let her wolf take all control.

Her wolf pulled images of Zane's sad eyes, the look of loss so clear. It brought her to another time she did not want to remember.

The hospital wing was busy with the flurry of patients and nurses. The metallic smell of blood mixed with antiseptic created a familiar atmosphere for Miriam. It brought her back to a time of war, a time she knew would come again.

There were mostly women and children with no adult male left to protect them. They had been scattered, chased off like unwanted pests, prey to be hunted at another time.

Most of the group had been organized. There were only a few people left in the line to check in and be seen. Miriam was at the forefront, accessing, creating medical records and taking down names, ages, any information she could.

Next in line a little girl was hiding behind her mother, but Miriam did not miss the wisps of white hair and the piercing eyes peeking around her mother's legs. This little one was born a healer, rare, beautiful and so very young.

Miriam approached the mother, clipboard in hand, and smiled reassuringly.

"Hello, dearie. My name is Miriam. I'm one of the doctors here. Can I get you all checked in?"

The mother's eyes seemed haunted and foreign as if she had come from another world. Gingerly, she placed her hand upon her daughter's shoulders and pushed her forward.

"My name is Sophie and this is my daughter, Lena. Please," She faltered. "Please, I just want her to be safe." She covered her mouth with one of her hands to silence her sob and then grasped Miriam's free hand with one of her own in a tight, unbreakable grip. "They are looking for her."

Miriam signaled one of the nurses with her clipboard and squeezed Sophie's hand back. "It's going to be ok. Don't you worry one bit!"

"You don't understand," Sophie interrupted with a sense of urgency that shook Miriam to her core. "He is looking for her. He's looking for all of them." She licked her lips and looked around. "All of the healers..."

She only had a moment to process the words, but her body reacted physically. Goosebumps broke out across her arms. There was a feeling of fear sweeping through Miriam, but on the outside she remained calm and steady as only those with years of experience in medical practice can do.

In her mind she was already thinking of dozens of questions. Who was looking for them? Why all of the healers? Was it the rogue pack?

Miriam ushered the nurse forward and directed her to the mother and daughter. "I want them both placed into a room, not a cubicle, until they are medically cleared and I want Zane to be notified immediately that I need to speak with him about something urgent right away. Can I trust you with this?"

The nurse, Holly, nodded, turned to the mother and daughter with a smile and ushered them down the hall. "We will take good care of you. Follow me."

Miriam turned away before her face could betray her. Why would anyone hunt down healers? Especially one so young... Yes, they were special wolves, mostly Alphas, with great healing powers that some believe were gifted by the goddess herself. But what purpose did they serve this man?

As Holly came back around the corner a few moments later, Miriam grabbed her arm. "Forgive my brashness, Holly. Please hurry to Zane. I have a very bad feeling."
