I felt like my heart was in my head! My head was pounding so much. I don't know why I'm so scared to talk to her. This has never happened before.
I walked in and noticed she wasn't there. How could she have gone somewhere when she told me to come see her?! I decided to wait 5 minutes. So I sat in a desk across from hers and waited. As I waited, I could see pictures of her family on her desk. Seeing a really nice picture of her 3 daughters in some sort of flower field. Her daughters looked young. I know she has twins and then a single but I don't know if the twins are older or younger. I know the kids are 5 and 3 though. That picture must've been taken over the summer. Then a picture of her entire family with her husband, her, their 3 daughters, and what appears to be a dog. I envied her. How I longed to have siblings and my dog back. My dog ran away this summer. I put up fliers and everything but nothing!
I looked up at the clock. 3 minutes had gone by and she still wasn't here. I was getting aggravated. She put my name in the announcements to come see her, and she's not here. Her stuff is still here so she didn't leave the building. As I was getting up to leave, she walked in. She looked rushed. I was confused so I just stood there staring at her. She looked at me once she was settled. She took a deep breath and said, "Take a seat, Mary. We have to talk!".
So I sat back down in the desk across from her. She looked at me with what seemed to be a hurt look in her eyes. Now I was hopelessly confused.
"Yes?" I finally spoke after a really awkward silence.
"This isn't easy for me, Mary. So bear with me." She spoke back after a minute or two of playing with her hands.
"This morning I told you your mom was arrested. Correct?".
"Yes." I said enunciating it.
"So you do understand your mom is going to jail, right?".
"Yes." I replied again.
"And you do realize you'll be an orphan?".
"Yes again!" I said with agitation in my voice.
"Mary, please don't do this with me. I'm trying to help, and I'm not finished.".
"Sorry, I just have to go see another teacher before I leave.".
"Well the hard stuff I apparently already told you this morning so that's off my shoulders! Phew!" She said with a look of relief.
"Well, with what happened to your mom and all, I don't want to see you be an orphan. So I talked it over with the school board, and my family, and we would like you to join our family. I think you'd be a great mentor for Simone, Justine, and Layla; my daughters. Simone and Justine are 5 and Layla is 3."
I just sat there staring into space with my mouth open. I can't believe she just said that. I didn't know what to say.
"I don't know what to say." I finally answered.
"That's okay. I'll give you time to think about it. It's totally up to you if you want to or not.".
"Okay!" I said. "I will probably let you know by Friday." I lied.
"That's fine by me. You take your time." She said.
"Is that all?" I asked.
"Yes. Yes it is." She replied.
"Okay. Thanks!" And I got up out of my seat and was ready to leave when Ms. Osgood came over and gave me a hug. I haven't had a hug like that in a long time. It felt nice.
So I left the room and went up a flight of stairs to go see Ms. Burke. If that was what Ms. Osgood wanted to talk to me about, I can't imagine what Ms. Burke wants to talk to me about. Great. My head is pounding all over again.
