Three Years Later ...
I woke up to the beeping of the alarm on my phone, I shut it off and rolled over. I looked over to Chris and saw that he was still asleep, so I got up and went to the bathroom.
I took a shower and washed my hair. After I finished I slipped on my robe and moisturized. Going back into the room Chris was still asleep. I climbed onto the bed and tapped him until he opened one of his eyes. "What time is it?", he asked in his rough morning voice.
I looked at my phone and said, "It's 3:26".
"Ugh" he complained, rolling over.
"Come on it was your idea to leave bright and early," I said as I started poking him cheek, "get up baby."
He reluctantly got up and walked into the bathroom. While he showered, I made sure everything we needed was in the car. I walked back into room and went to the closet to get dressed. Deciding on an purple tank top and biker shorts. After getting myself ready I went to get Maddie from her room.
I walked into my daughter's room and turned on the lamp next to her bed. Knowing she wouldn't wake up I walked to the closet to get her something to wear, I grabbed a yellow t shirt with a bear on it and some black shorts. Putting the clothing on her small comatose body was fairly easy. I picked her up and kissed her forehead. Walking out her room I grabbed the black pair of flats off the table by her door.
I laid on the bed with Maddie, while we waited for Chris. Chris come into the room, fully dressed and ready to go. "Ready?" he asked grabbing Maddie and her shoes from me.
I nodded response. I slipped on my shoes before walking out the room. We headed out the house and Chris put Maddie in her car seat and put her shoes on the seat next to her, she stayed asleep the whole time. I locked the door and got into the car.
Going back to my hometown wasn't ideal, but when my childhood best friend, Nevaeh, called saying her mom passed away I had to go back for the funeral. Nevaeh's mom always treated me like I was, also her daughter, and I loved her like a mother. Nevaeh is the only person I kept in contact with after I left, she'd come visit me every once in a while. Nevaeh is also Maddie's god mom.
"Hey, you okay?" Chris asks pulling out the driveway.
"I guess, I just still can't believe she's gone" I say.
He grabs my hand and squeezes it, "Yeah I know". I decided to stay awake this time, so we made small talk the entirety of the drive.
When we pulled into Nevaeh's driveway it was almost 8 in the morning, and she was already outside, since I texted her 10 minutes ago saying we was close. Nevaeh insisted we stay with her instead of a hotel. Saying she barley see her god daughter as it is and that a hotel would be a waste of money. Chris barley has time to park before Nevaeh was at the car and pulling me out. It's been 6 months since she last came to visit for her birthday along with mine and Maddie, and I've missed her. She hugged me tight, a little too tightly. "Can't breathe" I choked out.
"Sorry," she said as she stepped back, "I've just missed you, so much."
I grabbed her hand as I said "I missed you more".
Nevaeh carried Maddie into the house, even though she was wide awake now. I on the other hand needed a nap, and I could tell Chris did too. We put our bags in the room we were staying in, Nevaeh also had a room for Maddie. "Okay, you guys can sleep cause you look like you're about to fall asleep standing there. I'll take Maddie to breakfast and spend some time with her."
I let out a laugh. "Okay, just no junk before one and please be safe" I said as I kissed Maddie bye.
"Always" Nevaeh said before walking out the door.
"Why did we decide to leave so early", I said to Chris as we walked into the room.
"Because, we wanted Maddie to sleep the whole drive down here" he said before yawning. I slipped my shoes off and crawled into bed, with Chris following right after.
He kissed my cheek and said, "Go to sleep baby." And I did.
